The North U17 side were too strong for their South counter-parts, winning 10-1 at the Dell, Kingussie on Sunday 3 October 2010.
The South created the first chance of the match when Aberdour’s Alec Mitchell got sight of goal in the second minute but North keeper Jack Fraser made a fantastic save to stop Mitchell’s rocket shot which was heading for the top right corner of the net.
The North took the lead after 4 minutes. The North’s Martin Bruce of Skye Camanachd and the South’s Gary McKerracher of Oban Camanachd battled for possession on the North right. The ball broke to Lochcarron’s Ben Dalgety who launched a huge clearance forward which fell to Kingussie’s Thomas Borthwick and he blasted the ball into the roof of the net.
Greg Matheson doubled the North’s advantage a couple of minutes later. The Lovat forward played keepy-upy and made enough space to shoot home from 10 yards out.
The South made a switch in defence giving Oban Camanachd’s Peter Currie the task of marking the ever-dangerous Thomas Borthwick.
A sweet strike from Lochaber’s Connor Sweeney from the left made it 3-0 after 19 minutes.
North keeper Jack Fraser had to look lively to turn away a Ryan Harrison shy which dropped on goal on 26 minutes.
Thomas Borthwick netted his second to make it 4-0 on 28 minutes when he turned a Connor Sweeney corner into the net.
A deep cross from Greg Matheson on 34 minutes found Borthwick but South keeper Innes MacDonald of Kyles Athletic raced from his goal to close down the danger and the ball was cleared for a corner. Martin Bruce played the resultant shy in from the right to Beauly’s Jack MacDonald who smashed the ball into the net.
Skye Camanachd’s Paul MacKinnon came close to adding to the North tally but his shot went just wide of target after some good lead up play.
South keeper Innes MacDonald, who is the son of Kyle’s keeper Kenny MacDonald, made a fantastic save from a Thomas Borthwick shot 4 minutes before the break.
A minute later MacDonald saved again from Greg Matheson but North substitute Kelvin MacKenzie of Glenurquhart reacted first to knock the ball into the net to give the North a 6-0 interval lead.
The North returned onto the attack a minute into the second half when Martin Bruce won possession in midfield and played the ball forward to Greg Matheson. Matheson exchanged passes with Thomas Borthwick but his shot went straight at MacDonald in the South goal.
Inverness’ Fraser Heath was continuing to prompt the North’s attack and on the hour mark, Innes MacDonald saved with his foot from Jack MacDonald and Greg Matheson couldn’t force the rebound into the net.
Paul MacKinnon found Greg Matheson with a cross from the left a minute later but he was denied again as MacDonald saved his bullet shot with his feet.
Good battling from the South’s Alec Mitchell on 67 minutes gave him the chance to shoot for goal but his effort went wide of target.
Innes MacDonald and Greg Matheson seemed to be having a personal dual and MacDonald saved again with his feet at the expense of a corner on 70 minutes.
A couple of minutes later, Thomas Borthwick played the ball into the goal area and Lochaber’s Stuart Callison fired pas MacDonald to make it 7-0.
Callison turned provider on 76 minutes as Thomas Borthwick tucked his cross from the left into the net to complete his hat-trick and make it 8-0.
Jack MacDonald crossed from the right on 82 minutes and Greg Matheson’s shot cracked off the top of the crossbar.
South forward Alec Mitchell had been having a fine tussle with North captain Danny Delaney and moments after Delaney had been withdrawn, Ryan Harrison cut in from the South right and ran through on goal to slip the ball past Fraser into the net to make it 8-1.
Jack MacDonald scored his second 5 minutes from time when he neatly guided the ball into the net.
Craig Anderson of Glasgow Mid Argyll blazed wide a couple of minutes from time as the South tried to grab another goal in the closing stages.
With a minute remaining, Greg Matheson juggled the ball on his stick as he ran through the defence and slipped the ball into the net to score his second and make it a perfect 10 for the North.
This was a good performance from a strong North side and their forward play was a joy to watch. Innes MacDonald in the South goal saved his side from a heavier defeat and their forward Alec Mitchell also stood out.
The trophy was presented to North captain Danny Delaney by Camanachd Association Communications Director Donald Stewart.
