Skye Camanachd 5 Lochcarron 3. | |
05 September 2010 Skye Camanachd won an entertaining derby match against Lochcarron at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree in Marine Harvest North Division 1 on Saturday 4 September 2010. Skye Camanachd manager Aonghas MacDonald made 2 changes to his starting line-up with Kenny Campbell missing out as he was working whilst Gilleasbuig MacDonald was unavailable. Iain Nicolson started at full centre with Danny Morrison at buckshee forward and Somhairle MacDonald at full forward. Allan Mackinnon returned to the squad and took up a place on the bench along with youngsters Shaun Hedley and Jordan Murchison. Stewart Grant was allowed to travel to Balgate with an under-strength second team. Skye started with a stiff Pairc nan Laoch breeze at their backs and they launched an attack from the throw up but the ball went past the post. However Skye’s Somhairle MacDonald intercepted a poor hit out and although Lochcarron keeper Craig Callaghan got his hand to MacDonald’s shot, he couldn’t keep the ball out of the net. Within 60 seconds Lochcarron were level. Skye were aggrieved at a soft free hit awarded to the visitors in the middle of the park. The ball was played into the danger area and Lochcarron full centre Mark Sproule burst forward to hammer a shot from right of goal to make it 1-1. Skye returned on the offensive and Craig Callaghan saved an Alan Palmer shot with his feet after 4 minutes. Skye regained the lead after just 7 minutes. A long ball forward from Neil MacVicar found Alan Palmer and he played a neat one-two with Somhairle MacDonald before coolly tucking the ball, low into the net. Skye went 3-1 up on 11 minutes. Skye wing back Martin Bruce broke up a Lochcarron attack and a combination of Shockie MacLennan and Iain Nicolson saw the ball played forward where some good play from Danny Morrison played in Iain Morrison. Wing forward Morrison cut across goal and his shot took a slight deflection off a Lochcarron defender before nestling in the back of the net. Skye full centre Iain Nicolson suffered an ankle knock early in the game and after trying to play on at full forward, he was forced to come off after 15 minutes. Jordan Murchison came on in his place at wing forward with Alan Palmer going to full forward and Somhairle MacDonald taking up the full centre position. Lochcarron pulled a goal back after 19 minutes. Full forward Iain MacKenzie collected a ball from a free-hit and turned before striking ta shot past Jamie Gannon to make it 3-2. Skye buckshee back Shockie MacLennan required treatment after 25 minutes when he was caught in the eye by the tip of a swinging caman. After treatment on the touchline from Skye medic Dr Wilson Banks, MacLennan returned to action in a midfield role. A Shockie MacLennan shot was dummied by Alan Palmer after 32 minutes and went narrowly past Callaghan’s right post. Skye substitute Jordan Murchison was looking lively on the Skye right and was having a good tussle with Ben Dalgety. Murchison saw one wonderful back-hand volley from the right touchline drop narrowly over Callaghan’s crossbar. However Murchison was soon to score his first senior goal as on 36 minutes, he played in Alan Palmer whose shot was blocked by Callaghan but Murchison followed up to confidently crack the rebound into the net to put Skye 4-2 ahead. Jamie Gannon did well to save a Mark Sproule shot with his legs on 37 minutes and Steven Morison cleared the danger at the expense of a corner. Skye threatened the visiting goal a couple of minutes before the break when a Jordan Murchison shot went across the goal and past the post as the Islanders took their 4-2 lead into the break. Lochcarron had the advantage of the breeze in the second half but the opening exchanges were fairly even with Allan MacLeod in the Skye defence using his experience to make enough space for himself clear a couple of visiting attacks. Referee John MacPhee booked Lochcarron’s Calum Finlayson for dangerous swinging on the hour mark. His reckless swing caught Skye’s Shockie MacLennan just above the wrist and he was unable to take any further part in the game. Shaun Hedley came on in his place at left wing centre for his first team debut. Jamie Gannon made a tidy save from Gregor Cushnie after 66 minutes and Lochcarron took Michael Cooper on in place of David Cameron a minute later. Skye score the goal of the match on 71 minutes. Kerr Gibb played the ball forward to Danny Morrison who switched play to Iain Morrison who had by now moved to full forward. Morrison returned the ball to Danny Morrison, who was very effective for Skye all afternoon, and Callaghan blocked his shot only for Jordan Murchison to follow up and tuck the rebound low past the keeper to notch his second strike of the afternoon and make it 5-2. Lochcarron reduced the deficit 5 minutes later when the Skye defence failed to clear a free-hit from the right and Andrew Slaughter powered through to ram the ball into the net to make it 5-3. Skye full forward Iain Morrison was enjoying a good battle with Lochcarron full back Ross Matheson and the Skye youngster was booked on 79 minutes following one particularly full-blooded challenge. Iain MacKenzie used his experience to create space for himself on the left but his shot went wide. He saw another effort saved by Jamie Gannon’s and the rebound went wide. Lochcarron introduced veteran Alan MacKenzie at full forward in the closing stages. Somhairle MacDonald thrilled the home support on 84 minutes with a great dribble forward from midfield in which beat several opponents but he couldn’t round off the move with the goal his play deserved. Skye Camanachd finished the game with 6 of last season’s U17 London Shield winning side on the field – Martin Bruce, Neil MacVicar, Shaun Hedley, Danny Morrison, Iain Morrison and Jordan Murchison – and that bodes well for the future.
