Cuach Shomhairle MhicGill-Eain - Portree High School v Plockton High School. | |
12 April 2010 Cuach Shomhairle MhicGill-Eain Portree High School v Plockton High School Pàric nan Laoch, Portree, Wednesday 12 April 2010, 4pm
This competition was established between the two schools in memorial of the renowned Gaelic poet, the late Sorley MacLean, who passed away in 1996.
Sorely was born in Raasay in 1911 and he was pupil at Portree High School before he went to University in Edinburgh where he played for the university side. He returned to the school as a teacher and played for the school when they won the Robertson Cup in 1937 – he wrote about this in the Poem “Spring 1937 (trnas)” which can be found in the Skye Camanachd history “A Century Remembered”.
He eventually became rector of Plockton High School and he greatly encouraged the sport of the Gael in Lochalsh, in particular the Kinlochshiel club. The late Johnny “Ach” MacRae was one of Sorley’s pupils.
But Sorley lived in Braes on Skye and had a strong affinity with the Skye Camanachd. He was often to be seen at the edge of the park beside the late, great DR MacDonald, who was married to his daughter Catriona. His grandsons, Somhairle, Aonghas and Gilleasbuig still play for the Island and they have taken part in this competition as players and referees through the years.
The Quaich has been in Portree’s possession since 2005 but Plockton will take encouragement from the victory of their girls’ team in the Cuach Sgathaich against Portree before Christmas.
