Kinlochshiel’s Finlay MacRae Is Looking Forward To Shinty / Hurling Internationals. | |
20 October 2011 Kinlochshiel forward Finlay MacRae is looking forward to the Shinty / Hurling international double-header with Ireland. The 2010 Marine Harvest North Division 1 Player of the Year will earn his fifth cap in the game in Ireland. He said, “It was great news to hear from Drew that I would be involved again in the Scotland squad this year. I always look forward to these games at the end of the year. It’s a good way to round off the shinty season.” MacRae knows that fitness is key and this has required self-discipline as his club side Kinlochshiel has not been in action for several weeks. “Training by yourself is hard work so you have to keep your self-discipline. You do your bit on your own but the squad has been together every Sunday in recent weeks so that’s a bit help.” The Bught Park provides the setting for the return leg and MacRae hopes the surface will suit the Scots’ style of play. “We prefer to play slick shinty on short grass but the internationals are played in October every year so the weather can affect things. But if there is one pitch that will hold up well, then it’s the Bught Park.” MacRae is confident that these occasions provide the opportunity for players to improve their game. “You always learn something from these matches. We thought we were in control after the first game last year and then they beat us in Inverness. I’m sure Drew will have us well prepared for the games ahead though.” The Ireland and Scotland senior sides meet at Athy, Co. Kildare in the first test on Saturday 22 October 2011. The match may be streamed live over the internet by Irish channel TG4. There will be delayed coverage of the match on BBC ALBA at 4pm on Sunday 23 October 2011. The second test between Scotland and Ireland takes place at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 29 October 2011. The match starts at 2pm and will be shown live on BBC2 Scotland if you are unable to make the game. The second test will be preceded by a Challenge Shinty / Camogie match between Scotland and the British Universities side which starts at 10.30am. The Scotland U21 and Ireland U21 sides clash at 12 noon.
