Ireland v Scotland – Shinty / Hurling International …………. 5 Days To Go! | |
17 October 2011 Scotland Head Coach Drew McNeil explained how the Scotland squad selection process worked ahead of the Marine Harvest Shinty / Hurling international double header against Ireland. Speaking on local radio station Cuillin FM, Drew McNeil said, “When I took over the Scotland Head Coach role a year ago, I decided it would be best if the clubs nominated their best players. That’s where the selection process begins. The players then sign up that they agree to attend the training sessions. We ask a lot of the players and those selected have gone through fitness tests and attended on four other Sundays to train so it is a lot of commitment. We whittle the squad down to 19 players and we are asking for peak fitness at the end of October but that’s what we need to do to compete with the Irish.” The Irish have yet to name their squad but McNeil is sure it will contain plenty quality. “They have had training sessions too and I expect their final squad will contain players from the three tiers of hurling as usual. They will be strong and don’t forget we have players from our second tier and they certainly don’t weaken our squad any.” The Ireland and Scotland senior sides meet at Athy, Co. Kildare in the first test on Saturday 22 October 2011. The match may be streamed live over the internet by Irish channel TG4. There will be delayed coverage of the match on BBC ALBA at 4pm on Sunday 23 October 2011. The second test between Scotland and Ireland takes place at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 29 October 2011. The match starts at 2pm and will be shown live on BBC2 Scotland if you are unable to make the game. The second test will be preceded by a Challenge Shinty / Camogie match between Scotland and the British Universities side which starts at 10.30am. The Scotland U21 and Ireland U21 sides clash at 12 noon.
