The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 15 October 2011. | |
17 October 2011 Newtonmore took advantage of Kyles Athletic’s inactivity to draw level on points at the top of the Scottish Hydro Premier Division following the fixtures on Saturday 15 October 2011. Scottish Hydro Premier DivisionNewtonmore 5 Oban Camanachd 0 Reigning champions Newtonmore go level with Kyles Athletic at the top of the Scottish Hydro Premier Division following their 5-0 win over Oban Camanachd at the Eilan. It took a last minute Glen MacKintosh goal to earn Newtonmore a share of the points in a 2-2 draw at Mossfield earlier in the season but they were never in any danger in this one. ‘More went ahead after 4 minutes when a Danny MacRae effort may have gone in off a visiting defender. Referee Graham Cameron awarded the home side a penalty on 19 minutes and Glen MacKintosh made no mistake as he beat Scotland keeper Gavin Stobbart from the spot. MacKintosh added a third on 24 minutes and Oban Camanachd’s cause wasn’t helped when David MacInnes was sent off on 39 minutes. He was initially yellow carded for something he said to the referee Cameron after a decision had gone against Oban. He was then called back and shown a second yellow card and a red card. He seemed to be shown a second red card before he left the field. Newtonmore were dominant in the first period and their centre line had a real grip of the game. Therefore it was no surprise when Glen MacKintosh completed a first half hat-trick when he netted a minute before the break to make it 4-0. Newtonmore boss Norman MacArthur took off Danny MacRae at the interval with John MacKenzie coming on in his place. Many in the crowd would have expected Newtonmore to go on to really eat into Kyle Athletic’s goal difference advantage in the second half. However Oban Camanachd came much more into the game and the second 45 minutes was a more even affair. John MacKenzie missed couple of good opportunities for ‘More but they only managed one more goal and that came again from that man Glen MacKintosh in the final minute – his fourth goal of the afternoon - to complete a 5-0 victory. Newtonmore have two more matches to play; away to both Kilmallie and Kyles Athletic. They are level on points with Kyles but the Tighnabruaich side are six goals better off with three games to play; at home to Inveraray, at home to Kingussie and a potential title decider at home to Newtonmore. The defeat leaves Oban Camanachd in the division’s second relegation spot, a point behind Lovat and Inveraray. Oban’s final match is at home to Kilmallie. Glenorchy 1 Glenurquhart 4 Glenurquhart finished the season on a high with a 4-1 win over Glenorchy at Mart Park, Dalmally. A Neale Reid goal was all that separated the teams when they met at Blairbeg earlier in the season and this was both side’s final game of the season. Throw up was delayed because of a road traffic accident on the A85. When the game did start, Glenurquhart had to recover from losing an early John MacNulty goal within the first 5 minutes. However doubles from Liam Girvan and Scottish international John Barr gave the Blairbeg men both points which takes them into fourth place in the table although Kingussie and Kilmallie have games in hand and may yet overtake them. Glenorchy have completed their top division campaign without picking up any points. Kyles Athletic P Kingussie P The match between league leaders Kyles Athletic and Kingussie was switched to Mossfield as the pitch at Tighnabruaich was unplayable. The match was then to have a delayed throw up as a road traffic accident closed the A85. However with players and supporters arriving at the ground, the match was postponed because of an unplayable field. Kilmallie P Lovat P The game between Kilmallie and Lovat was postponed as the Canal Parks was ruled unplayable. This fixture seems jinxed as this is effectively the fourth time this season that the game has been unable to go ahead at Caol. Marine Harvest South Division 1Kilmory 0 Bute 6 Bute beat Kilmory 6-0 in the final match in Marine Harvest South Division 1. The home side were without forward Alex Cunningham who was sent off in the defeat to the Kyles Athletic reserve side a fortnight ago. Robert Walker finished the Islanders top scorer with a hat-trick whilst Roberto Zavaroni, Ruairidh Soane’s second senior goal and an own goal completed the win. Bute have now completed their league campaign with an impressive 100% record with sixteen wins from sixteen games. They also have the Balliemore Cup in the trophy cabinet as they look forward to life in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division next season. Marine Harvest North Division 2Fort William 0 Glengarry 1 Second place Fort William forfeited home advantage in their derby match against third place Glengarry. Fort William’s Black Park pitch was unplayable so the game was switched to Craigard, Invergarry. The Fort were without the suspended Cameron Grant. Glengarry were minus influential pair Steven Cameron and Stephen Brady. Both keepers made good saves to keep the first half goalless. In the end an Aaron Clark goal 4 minutes into the second half was all that separated the sides and this means third place ‘Garry finish a point behind second place Fort William. Kinlochshiel P Kilmallie P Already relegated Kilmallie were unable to raise a team for their trip to Kirkton to play Kinlochshiel so the match was postponed. |
