14 September 2011 Newtonmore’s last win in shinty’s premier competition came on 7 June 1986 when they ran out 5-1 winners against Oban Camanachd at Old Anniesland, Glasgow. The early rounds in these days were still played on a regional basis. Newtonmore received a first round bye before beating both Kinlochshiel and Lochaber 7-0 to reach the semi final where they squeezed past Badenoch rivals Kingussie 4-3. Oban Camanachd also received a first round bye before beating Ballachulish 7-0 and Glenorchy 5-3 before they edged past Kyles Athletic 6-5 after extra time in their semi final. Newtonmore suffered a blow ahead of the final when defender and captain Willie Menzies missed out through suspension. Defender Iain MacKintosh was named skipper instead. The Newtonmore side featured two sets of brothers. George and John Fraser were usually found amongst the goals whilst the men from the Eilan could also relay on the influence of Iain, Alan and Ken MacKintosh. Oban Camanachd had Nigel Evans and Diarmid MacMillan in defence and their own set of brothers, Gordon and Dougie MacIntyre, in midfield. Current referee Colin MacDonald was named in attack. It took Newtonmore 20 minutes to break the deadlock but when they did, the goals flowed and they led 4-0 at the break. George Fraser was the ‘More hat-trick hero whilst John Fraser and Alan MacKintosh also beat Oban keeper Sandy MacLeod. Oban Camanachd’s consolation goal came from 21 year old Gary Kilpatrick when he beat Hugh Chisholm on the hour mark. The win gave Newtonmore a record 28th success in the completion which has yet to be equaled. The Albert Smith medal for man of the match went to Oban Camanachd’s 20 year old full centre Gordon MacIntyre.
