The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 10 September 2011 | |
12 September 2011 The wet weather wiped out all but four shinty fixtures on Saturday 10 September 2011. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Oban Camanachd 2 Fort William 0 Oban Camanachd picked up two priceless points in their fight against relegation with a 2-0 win over Fort William at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd are fighting it out with Lovat and Inveraray to avoid the league’s second relegation spot and with their rivals not in action, the Oban side stole a march by securing what could prove to be an important win. Gary Innes returned for the visitors after missing last week’s defeat to Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich. Fort William are assured a third place finish and this was the final match of a trophy-less season for the An Aird side. However they will take heart from the performances of younger players such as Stevie Stewart and Daniel Stewart as they rebuild for next season with one or two of the old guard considering retirement. Teenager Malcolm Clark put the Oban Camanachd ahead 10 minutes from the break and Aidan MacIntyre sealed the win with a 52 minute strike in what was an entertaining match. Oban Camanachd now leap-frog Lovat and Inveraray into seventh place in the table. They have 12 points from fourteen games whilst Inveraray and Lovat are both a point behind with each side having played a match more. Kyles Athletic P Kingussie P The match between league leaders Kyles Athletic and Kingussie was postponed. The pitch at Tighnabruaich was ruled unplayable and efforts to arrange an alternative venue proved fruitless. Kilmallie P Newtonmore P The game between Kilmallie and Newtonmore was postponed as the Canal Parks was unplayable. Glenorchy P Glenurquhart P An unplayable pitch also ruled out the game between Glenorchy and Glenurquhart at Dalmally. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Lovat 8 Fort William 0 Lovat eased their relegation fears with an 8-0 win over Fort William at Balgate. Fort William were without defender Cameron Grant who was suspended. The goals continued for the home side in the second half as Connal MacIllechiar made it 5-0 on 64 minutes and Greg Matheson completed his hat-trick when he fired past Cal Brown on 73 minutes. Jimmy MacKenzie bagged a brace with goals on 80 and 83 minutes to complete an emphatic 8-0 victory when ensures Marine Harvest North Division 2 shinty at Balgate next season. Kinlochshiel 3 Glenurquhart 2 Kinlochshiel also guaranteed their Marine Harvest North Division 2 status with narrow 3-2 win over Glenurquhart at Kirkton. Scott Kennedy put ‘Shiel in front on 10 minutes but a Lewis MacLennan double on 19 and 25 minutes put the visitors ahead. ‘Shiel were boosted by John MacRae’s inclusion in the side and he made it 2-2 on 43 minutes. David Falconer scored what proved to be the winner on the hour mark. It will now be either reigning champions Glenurquhart or Kilmallie who finish in bottom spot in the league. Bottom side Kilmallie need to take at least a point from their penultimate match at Kinlochshiel in a fortnight’s time. They then host Glenurquhart in their final match when a win would secure their safety on goal difference. Glenurquhart simply need to avoid defeat in their final match at Kilmallie. |
