Skye Camanachd 2 Kingussie 0 | |
04 September 2011 Skye Camanachd beat Kingussie 2-0 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 27 August 2011. Skye Camanachd second team manager Davie MacVicar named a 16 man pool with six changes from the squad which lost 5-1 to Lochaber at Spean Bridge last weekend. Scott MacLeod, Mark Mortimer, Stewart Grant, the injured Ruairidh Morrison and Angie MacPherson dropped out of the squad. However Neil MacVicar, Iain Nicolson, Darryl Macintosh, Jordan Murchison, Iain Morrison and Ally MacDonald all came into the starting line-up whilst Martin Bruce came off the bench to start in defence. Neil John Campbell was a late call-off and Andrew Banks came into the side in his place. Kingussie included four of the back five which defeated Skye Camanachd in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup semi final but they had notable absentees up front including Kevin Thain and Martin Dallas. However the Skye support did see a rare appearance from one of the true Kingussie greats as Davie Anderson started in attack along-side his son Jack Anderson. Skye played with the wind in the first half and they came close to taking the lead on 4 minutes when a goal-bound shot from Will Cowie from all of 40 yards was stopped by Kingussie keeper Robbie MacPherson and David Grant put the rebound wide of the goal. Skye continued to press and they deservedly took the lead on 9 minutes. Darryl Macintosh launched a huge drive from the centre line which was dropping under the King’s crossbar and keeper Robbie MacPherson did well to keep his effort out. However the ball dropped to Will Cowie just right of goal and he blasted the ball across keeper MacPherson, high into the net to put Skye 1-0 in front. MacPherson was in action again 60 seconds later when he foiled Jordan Murchison after a slip from a Kings’ defender and the ball was cleared for a corner. Kingussie responded and a rasping drive from wing centre Duncan Davidson rose just over the bar. Skye returned on the attack and they came close on 28 minutes when David Grant turned his marker but saw his waist high shot blocked by keeper MacGregor. Jordan Murchison shot narrowly past the post on the half hour mark. Skye continued to enjoy the bulk of the pressure with Iain Nicolson dominant in midfield and David Grant saw a shot saved by Robbie MacPherson on 34 minutes. Skye went 2-0 ahead on 38 minutes. Jordan Murchison collected a pass in front of goal and he played the ball right to the on-rushing Iain Nicolson. The Skye full centre needed little invitation to shoot and he smashed the ball into the top corner of the net with MacPherson helpless. Kingussie made a positional change at the break with Chris Holly Song moving from the forward line into the defence and Rory MacGregor going in the opposite direction. Skye manager Davie MacVicar introduced Paul MacKinnon in place of David Grant in attack with Ally MacDonald going to full forward. Skye keeper John MacLeod saved a Davie Anderson shot with his feet after 48 minutes and he hooked the ball away for a corner. Jordan Murchison linked up with Ally MacDonald before shooting wide on 59 minutes. Skye made their second change when Ally MacLeod came on in place of Will Cowie on 65 minutes. It was a well-earned rest for Cowie who had also played for the Skye U14s and U17s during the week. Robbie MacPherson made a great save to his left from a Jordan Murchison snap-shot after Darryl Macintosh and Ally MacLeod had linked up on 68 minutes. A hook-shot from Peter Dickson went over the Skye bar on 70 minutes. Robbie MacPherson was helpless after 72 minutes when a back-hand shot from Jordan Murchison crashed off the Kingussie crossbar. Kingussie player / manager Norman Dickson came on in place of U14 player Jack Anderson a minute later. Some good forward play involving Iain Nicolson and Ally MacLeod set up a chance for Jordan Murchison who made space for himself but his shot went over the bar on 74 minutes. Robbie MacPherson made a great save above his head on 75 minutes from an Ally MacLeod shot and Jordan Murchison put the rebound wide. Kingussie forward Peter Dickson fell awkwardly after 77 minutes so Jack Anderson returned to the action under the rolling substitutes rule. Skye keeper John MacLeod made a smart save with his hand from Duncan Davidson on 79 minutes and the ball was swept away for a corner on the Kingussie right. Robbie MacPherson saved well with his feet from Jordan Murchison on 85 minutes and a shot from Ally MacLeod went right across the goal-line before Chris Holly Song cleared. Iain MacLellan came on in place of Paul MacKinnon after 85 minutes and he forced another good stop from MacPherson. Skye keeper John MacLeod did well to keep out a lob from Rory MacGregor just under his bar seconds later. John MacLeod saved well again after 87 minutes after Duncan Davidson had been played in by a neat Davie Anderson flick. Referee Iain Kennedy played a couple of minutes stoppage time but it was Skye who beat Kingussie at the third time of asking this season. This was another two valuable points for Skye Camanachd and they have now won three home matches in a row. Best for Skye were Iain Grant in defence and Iain Nicolson in midfield. Kingussie keeper Robbie MacPherson was their top performer and his second half saves in particular were of the highest quality.
