28 August 2011 Fort William U14 won the 2011 Donnie MacLean memorial Sixes following a full day’s shinty at Spean Bridge on Sunday 28 August 2011. A total of ten teams took part in this round-robin event. Ardnamurchan, Fort William, Kilmallie, Kingussie, reigning champions Kinlochshiel, Lochaber, Lochcarron and Newtonmore were there from the North whilst Inveraray and Milngavie & Bearsden were the South representatives. The top four teams met in the semi finals with Newtonmore edging out Badenoch rivals Kingussie 1-0 in a close match thanks to a Cameron MacNiven strike. The other semi final was also a derby with Fort William eventually running out 5-0 winners over Lochaber. Dejan Watson and Lewis Morrison each netted twice whilst Calum Shepherd got the other. Newtonmore started well in the final although Fort William’s Dejan Watson went closest to scoring when a shot from distance came off the post. Newtonmore, coached by first team keeper Michael Ritchie, thought they had taken the lead when Cameron MacNiven netted from a free-hit on the stroke of half time but the effort was ruled out as one of his team-mates was offside. Fort William took control in the second half and they went in front when Calum Shepherd won the ball in midfield and fired a great shot into the net to make it 1-0. Newtonmore fought back but they found a formidable barrier in Fort William full back Lewis Smith and keeper Alexander Cameron. The Fort, coached by Victor Smith and Jock Sneddon, doubled their advantage when a shot from Lewis Morrison was saved by the ‘More keeper but the rebound fell for Dejan Watson and he slammed the ball into the net to win the trophy. This well run competition was refereed by Duncan Kelly, Jason Latto and Ally Ferguson. |
