The Saturday Shinty Round Up – Saturday 13 August 2011. | |
17 August 2011 The finalists for the 2011 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final, Strathdearn Cup Final and Bullough Cup Final are known following the semi final ties on Saturday 13 August 2011. Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup - Semi Finals Inveraray 2 Newtonmore 5 A huge day of shinty action at Spean Bridge started at 12.45pm as Inveraray met Newtonmore for a place in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final. Inveraray boss John Smylie has been short of players in recent weeks but he had key men back for this one. Russell McKinlay travelled North and Douglas Dando also returned. Newtonmore were without suspended keeper Michael Ritchie so reserve keeper Sean MacQuarrie took his place in goal before dashing off to the Canal Parks to play for the second team in their later throw up against Fort William in the Strathdearn Cup semi finals. Newtonmore brushed aside holders Fort William earlier in the competition whilst Inveraray knocked out the much fancied Kyles Athletic side so both teams had to work hard to reach the last four. Inveraray last appeared in a Camanachd Cup Final in 2007 but it was Newtonmore who made it through to their first final since 1997 with a 5-2 extra-time win. Newtonmore took the lead on 10 minutes when Danny MacRae collected Steven MacDonald’s shy from the right and shot low into the net. Newtonmore had a scare moments later when a ball from distance bounced off Sean MacQuarrie’s right post before the keeper cleared the danger. Newtonmore were next to go close when Inveraray keeper Graeme MacPherson made a good save in the air from Danny MacRae. Paul MacArthur cracked a great 35 yard shot off the Inveraray post as ‘More looked to press their advantage. However it was Inveraray who levelled on 15 minutes when a Russell McKinlay pounced on a mishit from ‘More keeper Sean MacQuarrie to make it 1-1. Newtonmore dominated the remainder of the half but some good goalkeeping from Graeme MacPherson, including one outstanding save from a blistering Cameron Binnie drive, ensured the sides went into the break all square. Newtonmore were forced to replace Ackie MacRae after he took a blow to the face when shooting at goal and David Cheyne came on in his place. Russell McKinlay is rarely available for Inveraray away fixtures and he showed his worth when he put his side 2-1 ahead on the hour mark as he bulleted home a corner from the right. Newtonmore continued to dominate and they levelled on 75 minutes. Graeme MacPherson made a good save from a Danny MacRae shot but the resultant corner fell to substitute David Cheyne and he blasted the ball into the roof of the net. Cheyne went from hero to villain when he was sent off 5 minutes later by referee Graham Cameron after late challenge on Inveraray full back Scott Robertson. There was no further scoring so the match went into extra-time. Newtonmore continued to have the bulk of the play even although they were a man down. However it took a good Sean MacQuarrie save to deny Inveraray’s Garry MacPherson following a breakaway in the first half of extra-time. It became eleven-a-side when Inveraray’s Euan MacMurdo was sent off for a second bookable offence early in the second period of extra-time. Inveraray’s woes increased when Glen MacKintosh scored from the resultant free-hit which was taken by Steven MacDonald and this put the men from the Eilan 3-2 in front with 109 minutes played. Inveraray tried to fight back but Glen MacKintosh got his second a couple of minutes from the end although Graeme MacPherson was unlucky not to save the shot. Danny MacRae got his second to make it 5-2 just before the final whistle when he fired a corner from the left into the net off MacPherson’s post to seal a deserved Newtonmore win. Kingussie 6 Kilmallie 0 Throw up for the second semi final between Kingussie and Kilmallie was delayed by 15 minutes to 3.45pm because of the extra-time played in the first semi final but when the sides did take the field, they served up another cracker. Kingussie were without Iain Borthwick who has a broken bone in his foot and Louis Munro who is another long term injury absentee. Injury also ruled out Ally MacLeod whilst Kevin Thain was unavailable. Kilmallie suffered a double blow with striker John Stewart and defender Peter Carmichael both suspended. Martin Stewart remains on Kilmallie’s injury list but Alan MacDonald, Ross Lavin and Fraser Massie all returned. Defender Euan Stoddart took his place back in the side after rearranging his work commitments. In the end it took a powerful second half performance to see Kingussie come out on top as they eventually ran out 6-0 winners. Kilmallie played with the wind in the first half and they competed well and King’s keeper Andrew Borthwick made a couple of fine saves from Ross Lavin and Liam MacDonald. However it also took some outstanding stops from Kilmallie keeper Kevin Toye to keep the score level at the break and he denied both Martin Dallas and Ronald Ross. Kilmallie’s Michael Rodger had a good chance to score towards the end of the half but he blazed his shot over the bar. Kingussie exploded into action at the start of the second period and Ronald Ross put them ahead straight from the restart. Kingussie full centre Thomas Borthwick won the throw up and Craig Dawson slipped the ball to Ronald Ross who tucked the ball into the corner of the net. Ross went on to grab a 6 minute hat-trick with further strikes on 50 and 52 minutes to put the Kings 3-0 ahead. His second was a deflected shot which took a horrible bounce in front of keeper Kevin Toye before ending up in the back of the net. Ross then hit the post before grabbing his third which was a spectacular effort where he flicked the ball up before hitting a first time backhand shot into the net from a Craig Dawson cross. Craig Dawson netted on 58 minutes following good build up play involving Ronald Ross and Martin Dallas. Fraser Munro made it 5-0 on 70 minutes when he picked up a loose ball in the Kilmallie defence and crashed a shot into the roof of the net. Ross grabbed his fourth 8 minutes from time. Thomas Borthwick hit a great shot from distance which Toye could only chest away and Ross knocked the rebound into the net to give Kingussie a 6-0 triumph. The win sets up a Badenoch final at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 17 September 2011. Strathdearn Cup - Semi Finals Fort William 2 Newtonmore 3 A Chris Sellar double helped Newtonmore to a 3-2 win over Fort William in their Strathdearn Cup semi final tie at the Canal Parks. The tie was scheduled to take place at Black Parks, Fort William however the recent heavy rainfall led to the game being transferred to Kilmallie’s Canal Parks. These teams have established themselves as the top two sides in Marine Harvest North Division 2 and the semi final didn’t disappoint. Chris Sellar gave Newtonmore the lead in the opening minutes but Michael Slezas made it 1-1 on 7 minutes. Evan Menzies restored ‘More’s advantage on 19 minutes and they took this lead into the break. Some excellent goal keeping from Fort William’s Cal Brown kept his side in the game and a good finish from Jack Fraser made it 2-2 on 80 minutes. However Newtonmore were not to be denied and a terrific strike from Chris Sellar 5 minutes from the end gave them a 3-2 win and a place in the final. Glengarry 10 Glenurquhart 1 Glengarry will meet Newtonmore in the Strathdearn Cup Final after they were convincing 10-1 winners over holders Glenurquhart in their semi final at Craigard. Steven Cameron for the home side on 5 minutes and Fraser MacKenzie for the visitors on 8 minutes exchanged goals to leave the sides level early in the game. Michael Brady on 27 minutes and Steven Cameron’s second strike of the day on the half hour mark put ‘Garry 3-1 up. Glenurquhart’s chances took a further blow when keeper Gary MacKintosh was sent off by referee Graeme MacMillan following an altercation just after the third goal. Glengarry capitalised on their one man advantage and Ewan Brady scored their fourth on 42 minutes whilst Michael Brady put them 5-1 up when he netted a minute before the break. Glengarry went on to re-enforce their advantage in the second half. Ewan Brady got his second after 55 minutes and Arran Clark made it 7-1 on 71 minutes. Three further goals in a late four minute burst sealed a 10-1 triumph and a place in the final. Ewan Brady took his personal tally to four goals with efforts on 83 and 86 minutes, either side of Arran Clark’s second goal on 85 minutes. Bullough Cup - Semi Finals Aberdour 1 Col Glen 1 (Aberdour win 2-1 on penalties) It has been a testing season for Aberdour with the side sitting bottom of Marine Harvest South Division 1. However the team who this year celebrate their tenth anniversary put that behind them to win a place in the Bullough Cup Final with a penalty shoot-out win over Col Glen in Fife. Col Glen are in third place in Marine Harvest South Division 2 and they went behind to a Craig Grant goal after just 9 minutes. However Col Glen fought back and Steven MacKell made it 1-1 just 5 minutes from time. Referee George O’Rourke took the tie into extra time but there was no further scoring and Aberdour won 2-1 following a tense penalty shoot-out. Lochside Rovers 4 Tayforth 3 Lochside Rovers will face Aberdour in the Bullough Cup Final following their 4-3 win over Tayforth in their 3pm throw up in Oban. Jamie MacDonald has been finding the back of the net for Marine Harvest South Division 2 leaders Taynuilt this year and he put them ahead after 19 minutes. However Marine Harvest South Division 1 side Lochside Rovers levelled through their talisman Daniel MacKinnon just a couple of minutes later. Tayforth regained the advantage thanks to a Brendan Dougan strike 3 minutes into the second half. Brian MacCallum made it 2-2 on 69 minutes as the side continued to trade goals. Brendan Dougan scored his second to put Tayforth in front for the third time on 67 minutes but again Lochside came back to level thanks to Brian MacCallum’s second strike of the afternoon. David Lafferty hit the winner on 81 minutes when he put the Oban side ahead for the first time in the tie. There was even time for Lochside Rovers to miss a late penalty awarded by referee Dunkie Kerr before the end. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Lovat 1 Oban Camanachd 0 Lovat collected two crucial league points in their fight against relegation with a 1-0 win over Oban Camanachd at Balgate. Lovat went into the game without keeper Stuart MacDonald who had booked a holiday before this match was scheduled so reserve keeper Chris MacCallum took over between the sticks. Others missing for Lovat included captain Ryan Ferguson who was also on holiday, Fraser Gallacher and Martin Mainland. Lorne MacKay took over at full centre. Oban boss Diarmid MacMillan had a strong squad to choose from with forwards Iain MacMillan and Scott MacMillan back in contention. The game was settled by a 58 minute strike from 2010 Marine Harvest U17 Player of the Year and Scotland U17 captain Greg Matheson. Oban had a lot of pressure in the game, especially in the first half when they enjoyed the wind advantage and late in the game when they forced Lovat back. However some good goalkeeping from Chris MacCallum and some wasteful finishing left them without a goal. There was one controversial moment near the end when Oban had the ball in the net. However the goal was ruled out by referee Donald MacRae following consultation with goal judge Evan MacRae. Lovat now only have three matches left – at home to Kingussie and away to both Glenorchy and Kilmallie. Oban still have five matches remaining.
