29 July 2011 Bute won the 2011 Balliemore Cup and Newtonmore secured a place in the Artemis Macaulay Cup Final following the shinty matches played on Saturday 23 July 2011. Balliemore Cup Final Bute 2 Caberfeidh 1 Bute won the Balliemore Cup for the fourth time with a 2-1 victory over Caberfeidh in front of a crowd in excess of 800 at Pairc nan Laoch Portree. Caberfeidh had the better of the early exchanges but it was the Islanders who took the lead when a speculative Roberto Zavaroni ball from the left took a wicked bounce on the surface and deceived Cabers’ keeper David Mellis. The opening hour of the game was a fairly dull affair although there was more action during the closing 30 minutes. Bute doubled their lead on 62 minutes. James Craig won the ball in midfield and shot goalwards. Cabers’ keeper Mellis could do little but block his effort and Robert Walker got in ahead of the defenders to knock the rebound into the net. This goal would have killed off many teams but Cabers had looked the stronger side for much of the game but they were unable to convert their pressure into goals. However they did pull a goal back a couple of minutes later when full forward Kirk Taylor made enough space to turn and blast the ball into the net. Bute held out though and their victory was built on a superb defensive display. Internationals Hector Whitelaw and Iain MacDonald and Robert Liddell were excellent throughout as was Cuillin FM man of the match Davie MacDonald at full back. Caberfeidh’s top performer was Lee Nicol in defence whilst captain Kevin Bartlett caused Bute all sorts of problems in the opening 25 minutes. Veteran Graham MacGregor was also effective as was full centre Ally MacLennan. The match was well controlled by referee Graham Irving, assisted by Skye goal judges John Angus Gillies and John MacLeod. Bute captain John MacCallum was presented with the Balliemore Cup by Camanachd Association Chieftain Jock Turner. Newtonmore 2 Kingussie 1 Newtonmore will meet Kyles Athletic in the 2011 Artemis Macaulay Cup Final following their 2-1 win over Kingussie at the Eilan. This replay came about as last week’s encounter only lasted 22 minutes before the heavy rain and surface-water forced a postponement. Newtonmore manager Norman MacArthur’s side was along usual lines with Danny MacRae starting in attack. Kingussie went into the tie without manager Stevie Borthwick, keeper Andrew Borthwick and forward Thomas Borthwick who were at a family wedding in Canada. Ally MacLeod and Louis Munro were long term injury absentees and Rory Fraser was on holiday. Kingussie assistant manager Russell Jones took charge of the team and he gave a starting place to second team forward Kevin Thain and stand-in keeper Craig Dawson took Andrew Borthwick’s place in goal. The first half was goalless thanks to a couple of good saves by Greg Dawson in the Kings’ goal and one magnificent save by Michael Ritchie with his hand from a Ronald Ross rocket. Kings suffered a blow when they lost defender Iain Borthwick with a broken foot. ‘More took the lead on 61 minutes when a shot from distance from the excellent Steven MacDonald flew into the back of the net. However there was drama in the closing 10 minutes when Newtonmore keeper Michael Ritchie was red carded by referee Billy Wotherspoon for a rash challenge on Kingussie forward Fraser Munro. There was a delay as referee Wotherspoon asked Newtonmore to provide an appropriately numbered keeper’s jersey for replacement goalie John MacKenzie. Kingussie failed to take advantage of their one man advantage and Newtonmore went 2-0 in front on 90 minutes thanks to a Danny MacRae strike. Ronald Ross set up a frantic finish with a goal on 96 minutes but the holders were unable to conjure up another goal in the remaining 3 minutes of the tie so Newtonmore go through to the final. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Kilmallie 0 Fort William 4 Fort William won the match of the day in the top division when they beat Kilmallie 4-0 in their 3pm meeting at the Canal Parks.
