The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 16 July 2011. | |
22 July 2011 Kyles Athletic will represent the South in the 2011 Artemis Macaulay Cup Final but they will have to wait to find out who their opponents will be. However Fort William took advantage of Kyles Athletic’s inactivity in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division to go top of the table in the games played on Saturday 16 July 2011. Artemis Macaulay Cup - Semi Final Newtonmore A Kingussie A Newtonmore won the toss of the coin and so had home advantage for their Artemis Macaulay Cup semi final tie against deadly rivals Kingussie at the Eilan. However the match was abandoned after 22 minutes by referee Billy Wotherspoon because of the chronic rainfall in the area. Newtonmore started the game with Michael Ritchie in goal and talisman Danny MacRae in attack. Kingussie were minus Kevin Thain, Martin Dallas and James MacLean as well as the injured Ally MacLeod and Louis Munro. The opening period was goalless but the persistent heavy rain left referee Billy Wotherspoon with little option but to abandon the match. ‘More’s Jamie Robinson picked up a booking which will stand despite the game not finishing. The replayed semi final will now be played next weekend which does not suit Kingussie as manager Stevie Borthwick and players Andrew Borthwick, Ryan Borthwick and Thomas Borthwick will be missing because of a family wedding in Canada. Oban Camanachd 2 Kyles Athletic 7 Kyles Athletic will be the South representatives in this area tournament following their 7-2 win over Oban Camanachd at Mossfield. Kyles already have the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup to their name but their defeat to Inveraray in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup gave Oban Camanachd some hope. However the Oban side’s plans were dented because of player unavailability which included the suspended Daniel Cameron and James MacMillan and the injured Andrew Pearson. Kyles showed that they were not prepared to slip up for a second time when Roddy MacDonald put them ahead in the opening minute. The home side fought back though and Iain MacMillan made it 1-1 after 14 minutes. However Oban Camanachd only maintained parity for sixty seconds as Grant Irvine followed up his double against Lovat last week with a 15 minute strike. Robbie MacLeod made it 3-1 on the half hour back but Oban’s Matt Rippon pulled a goal back to make it 3-2 just a minute later. Kyles stamped their authority on the remainder of the match. Roddy MacDonald scored his second on 39 minutes and he completed his hat-trick a minute into the second half. Gordon Whyte made it 6-2 on 71 minutes and Roddy MacDonald beat Gavin Stobbart in the Oban goal to score his fourth goal of the day to give the Tighnabruaich men a 7-2 win and a spot in the final. Bullough Cup Quarter Final Col Glen 5 The Scots 0 Col Glen were too strong for army side The Scots in their Bullough Cup quarter final tie. Referee Euan Pearson was amongst the scorers when The SCOTS ran out 3-0 winners against Ballachulish in the first round. Col Glen received an opening round bye. Steven McKellar put the Marine Harvest South Division 2 team ahead after 10 minutes with Stuart McKellar adding a second 6 minutes later. Willie MacVicar found the back of the net on the half hour mark to give Col Glen a 3-0 lead at the break. Young Jamie MacVicar made it 4-0 on 65 minutes whilst a Donald MacDiarmid goal 10 minutes from time secured a 5-0 win and a place in the last four. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Fort William 8 Lovat 0 Fort William went top of the Scottish Hydro Premier Division with an 8-0 win over Lovat at An Aird. This was Fort William’s last home league match of the season as Peter McIntyre’s men have been able to play their home fixtures early in the year as their pitch will shortly close for repair work. They now have five remaining fixtures away from home. John MacDonald returned from suspension for the home side. It was an under-strength Lovat squad which took the road and their absentees included Calum Cruden, who was sent off against Kyles last weekend, and Lorne MacKay, who was suspended because of a points accumulation. Gordie MacKinnon put the home side in front after just 4 minutes when he latched on to a Gary Innes ball which stuck on the heavy pitch. Gary Innes was then on target on the half hour mark and Fort William took this 2-0 lead into the break. Gordie MacKinnon scored his second 5 minutes into the second half and Bryan Simpson made 4-0 just 6 minutes later. Bryan Simpson beat Stuart MacDonald to score his second on 65 minutes whilst Gordie MacKinnon helped himself to a hat-trick (and a McFlurry) on 72 minutes. Gary Innes notched his second 4 minutes from time and Stevie Stewart scored his first senior goal right on the final whistle. The Fort now lead Kyles Athletic by a point although the Tighnabruaich men have three games in hand. Inveraray 3 Glenurquhart 3 Inveraray and Glenurquhart shared the points following a 3-3 draw in their 3pm throw up at the Winterton. The home side found themselves in the unusual position of second bottom in the table ahead of this one and manager John Smylie knew his side could do with picking up some points. Glenurquhart will likely be the only side to beat both Kingussie and Newtonmore on their own turf this season and a point from such a difficult venue as the Winterton maintains an impressive away sequence. Manager Jim Barr was without suspended Scottish international Andrew Corrigan. Garry MacPherson put the home side ahead on 6 minutes but John Barr, who was again pushed into the attack, levelled the game 60 seconds later. A Russell MacKinlay double on 22 and 40 minutes helped Inveraray to a 3-1 lead which they held until 10 minutes from the end. However John Barr’s second goal of the game on 80 minutes and a Lewis MacLennan strike 4 minutes from time earned Glenurquhart another valuable point. Kilmallie 10 Glenorchy 0 Kilmallie went into their 3pm meeting with Glenorchy at the Canal Parks knowing that anything less than a win would be a blow to their chances of staying in shinty’s top flight. However they were in no mood to falter as they recorded the biggest win of the 2011 Scottish Hydro Premier Division campaign with a 10-0 triumph. Kilmallie were not in action last week and they had full centre Ross Lavin back after he missed the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup win over Lovat. Glenorchy have shown signs of improvement and only lost by two goal margins to Newtonmore and Fort William in recent weeks. Liam MacDonald put the blues ahead after 4 minutes and Michael Rodger made it 3-0 with goals on 6 and 18 minutes. Peter McIntyre made it 4-0 on 23 minutes and Michael Rodger completed his hat-trick on 35 minutes. Liam MacDonald’s second goal on 42 minutes put the home side 6-0 in front at the break and ended the game as a contest. Liam MacDonald became the second player to bag a hat-trick on 58 minutes and Peter McIntyre got his second to make it 8-0 on 61 minutes. Mark Graham – with his second goal of the afternoon after scoring earlier for the Kilmallie reserves against Skye Camanachd – netted on 72 minutes and John Stewart just 4 minutes later completed the 10-0 win. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kinlochshiel 5 Inverness 0 Having lost 11-0 to Kinlochshiel at the Bught last weekend, Inverness will be relatively pleased to have only lost 5-0 to the west coast side at Kirkton. Inverness missed Davie Glass’ presence in defence last week but he was back from suspension for this one. Craig Nicolson remained suspended though. Finlay MacRae continued his prolific season in front of goal with a hat-trick. Gordie MacDonald and John MacRae got the others. Johnston Gill’s side have now made it nine wins out of nine with five matches remaining. They have netted 38 goals and only lost 5 goals. Shiel’s remaining fixtures include tricky trips to Beauly, Skye and Strathglass as well as a visit to Spean Bridge to play title challengers Lochaber. They will have one home match remaining and that is a local derby with Lochcarron which is never easy. Beauly 1 Skye Camanachd 0 Beauly beat Skye Camanachd 1-0 in their 3pm throw up at Braeview Park. Caberfeidh duo Martin MacDonald and Liam Mutch served the second game of their two match bans which will at least leave them eligible to play in next weekend’s Balliemore Cup Final against Bute in Portree. Lochaber fielded a strong side although wing centre Ian Love was missing. The game exploded into life with three goals in three first half minutes. Ryan Toal put the visitors ahead after 11 minutes but Kirk Taylor made it 1-1 a minute later. However a 13 minute Lachlan Campbell effort put Lochaber 2-1 in front. Lochaber went on to take a 4-1 advantage into the break thanks to strikes from Ben Delaney after 22 minutes and Lachlan Campbell’s second after 35 minutes. Ryan Toal scored his second on 63 minutes and Kirk Taylor’s second strike of the afternoon after 76 minutes was no more than a consolation for the 2011 Balliemore Cup Finalists. Lochaber move into third place in the league. They trail leaders Kinlochshiel by eight points although they have two games in hand. Strathglass 0 Lochcarron 7 Strathglass and Lochcarron brought forward their match with Lochcarron to Friday 15 July 2011 and the visitors ran out 7-0 winners. Click on the following link to read a full match report Strathglass 0 Lochcarron 7 Marine Harvest South Division 1 Lochside Rovers 0 Bute 6 Bute march on towards the Marine Harvest South Division 1 title with a 6-0 win in their 12 noon meeting Lochside Rovers in Oban. The visitors started as favourites as they went in search of their eighth straight league win. Lochside were forced to give up some players to their under-strength first team Oban Camanachd which weakened their line-up. Doubles from Stuart Strathie and Robert Walker gave Bute a 4-1 win when the sides met on Rothesay in April and Roberto Zavaroni put them ahead in this one with the only goal of the first half after 35 minutes. Robert Walker capped a fine display by racking up five goals making him the day’s top scorer. Walker scored on 47, 64, 67, 72 and 80 minutes to seal a 6-0 win. Bute will now then turn their attention to the long trip to Portree and the Balliemore Cup Final against Caberfeidh next week. Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Kyles Athletic 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll and Aberdein Sutherland Cup finalists Kyles Athletic met at Yoker. Mid Argyll sit in second place in the league and they are well aware they cannot afford to drop any more points if they want to keep the pressure on leaders Bute. Kyles have saved their best form for the cup this season as they are only above second bottom Kilmory on goal difference. A goal in each half from Angus MacIntosh on 30 minutes and Craig Anderson just 5 minutes into the second half gave Mid Argyll a 2-0 win. Oban Celtic 5 Aberdour 1 Kenny Wotherspoon returned to the Oban Celtic side and netted a hat-trick in their 5-1 win over Aberdour in their 3pm throw up at Ganavan. An Ally McKerrachar goal 5 minutes from time was all that separated the sides when they met in Fife a fortnight ago and a Kenny Wotherspoon gave them a 2-0 lead at half time in this meeting. Aberdour pulled a goal back through Angus Thorburn 3 minutes into the second half but Oban Celtic were in no mood to be caught. Steven Davidson made it 3-1 on 51 minutes and Kenny Wotherspoon completed his hat-trick on the hour mark. David Hill capped his return to the side with a 71 minute effort to give his side a 5-1 victory. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Newtonmore 7 Kingussie 1 There was a good crowd at the Eilan for the reserve Badenoch derby between Newtonmore and Kingussie at the Eilan with the sides opting for a 7.30pm throw up on Friday 15 July 2011. Click on the following link to read a full match report Newtonmore 7 Kingussie 1 Lovat 0 Glengarry 6 Second place Glengarry kept up the pressure on league leaders Newtonmore with a 6-0 win at Balgate against Lovat. Arran Clark put the ‘Garry ahead after 14 minutes whilst a Ewan Brady double on 30 and 32 minutes made it 3-0. Steven Cameron hit a double with goals on 35 and 86 minutes whilst Arran Clark got his second just 4 minutes from time. Leaders Newtonmore have a whopping 10 point lead over Glengarry in the league although the Craigard men have three games in hand. Fort William 2 Kinlochshiel 1 Josh McGhee gave Fort William a 5 minute lead in their 12 noon throw up against Kinlochshiel at An Aird. The sides met at the same venue in the Strathdearn Cup this season when a Ewan Campbell double helped the Fort to a 3-0 win. Bobby MacMillan made it 2-0 just 5 minutes into the second half. However ‘Shiel, who were without keeper Ian Cameron, put last weekend’s heavy 13-2 defeat to Newtonmore behind them to put in a much better performance and Steven Isles pulled a goal back 10 minutes from the end but Fort William took the points. Glenurquhart 1 Lochaber 6 Glenurquhart and Lochaber met at Blairbeg. The reigning champions have had a mixed season so far and they will have been particularly disappointed to lose out to Kyles Athletic in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup last weekend. Stuart Callison grabbed a hat-trick, Keith Neville was on target and Connor Sweeney netted twice as Lochaber ran out 6-1 winners. Bradley Dixon scored a consolation goal for the home side. The sides are now level on ten points in the league having played twelve games each. Kilmallie 1 Skye Camanachd 0 Kilmallie were 1-0 winners in their crucial 12 noon meeting with Skye Camanachd at the Canal Parks. Click on the following link to read a full match report Marine Harvest South Division 2 Strachur W/O Aberdour Front-runners Strachur were awarded the points when bottom side Aberdour were unable to field a team for their meeting at Home Farm. Tayforth P Ballachulish P The match between Tayforth and Ballachulish was postponed because of a bereavement. Inveraray P Bute P The reserve derby between Inveraray and Bute was postponed because it was deemed that the Winterton could only take one match and the Scottish Hydro Premier Division clash between Inveraray and Glenurquhart took priority. Marine Harvest North Division 3 Inverness 3 Lochcarron 1 Inverness beat Lochcarron 3-1 in their rearranged Marine Harvest North Division 3 match at the Bught Park. Click on the following link to read a full match report Inverness 3 Lochcarron 1 Beauly R Inverness R The match between second place Beauly and Inverness at Braeview Park has been rescheduled for Monday 18 July 2011. However the home side only maintained parity for 3 minutes until Raymond Robertson scored to give Boleskine a 2-1 half time advantage. Raymond Robertson added his second on 52 minutes to put Boleskine 3-1 in front. Derek Maclean pulled a goal back for the home side 4 minutes later but Craig Pirrie made it 4-1 on the hour mark. Raymond Robertson completed his hat-trick on 80 minutes whilst Ewan Fraser made it 6-2 just 3 minutes from time. Lochbroom 3 Strathglass 5 Josh Fraser scored twice as Strathglass beat Lochbroom 5-3 in Ullapool. The visitors raced into a 4-0 lead within the first half an hour of the game. A quick-fire double from Josh Fraser on 5 and 10 minutes put them 2-0 in front. Ally MacAdam on 15 minutes and Lewis Douglas on the half hour mark made it 4-0. However the home side fought back with three goals to give the Strathglass a real scare. Ian MacFadyen hit a double on 55 and 60 minutes to make it 4-2 and Steven Bellshaw reduced the Strath’s advantage to a single goal with a 78 minute effort. Strathglass eventually confirmed their victory with a Mark MacLeod goal a minute from time. |
