Skye Camanachd Ladies 6 Strathglass Ladies 6 | |
21 June 2011 The Skye Camanachd Ladies drew 6-6 with the Strathglass Ladies in an exciting WCA North Division 2 match at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 18 June 2011. This was the Skye ladies third league outing following a defeat to Badenoch & Strathspey and a win over Lochaber. The Islanders were without sisters Rosalind Lamond and Helen Lamond and Isabella Law. However Catriona Gibb, Rebecca MacDonald and Fiona MacDonald were included and Moreen Pringle and Maureen MacLean added experience to the side. The visitors took the lead after 5 minutes when the ever-dangerous Hazel Hunter tucked the ball into the net. However Skye leveled on 9 minutes when Nicola MacSween burst forward to fire low past Strathglass keeper Pam MacLeod. There was a big cheer from the home support when Lorna MacRae put Skye 2-1 up with a good shot on 12 minutes and she made it 3-1 shortly after. However Hazel Hunter netted her second from a corner on 22 minutes and Clarrie Murdoch was on hand to square the match at 3-3. Strathglass pressed the Skye goal and only a couple of good saves from keeper Ilana Paterson stopped the side from Cannich going ahead. Lorna MacRae had the final say in the first half when she completed her hat-trick to put Skye 4-3 up at the break. Indeed Lorna MacRae almost put Skye further ahead on the stroke of half time when she expertly turned her marker to create a shooting opportunity but her effort rose just over the bar. Strathglass full forward Hazel Hunter completed her hat-trick early in the second half when she made it 4-4 as the game continued to swing from end to end. Caitlin MacLean was one of Skye’s top performers and she made enough space to fire into the net to put the home side in front again. However Strathglass fought back and Clarrie Murdoch scored her second to make it 5-5. Both teams went all out for a winner and when Nicola MacSween won the ball in midfield from a Strath clearance, she played in Lorna MacRae who whipped the ball into the net to put Skye 6-5 ahead as she grabbed her fourth goal of the afternoon. Strathglass finished strongly and a couple of good clearances from Maisie Tonagh helped keep the visitors at bay. However there was to be no home win for Skye as Clarrie Murdoch completed her hat-trick with a turn and shot just 4 minutes from time to make it 6-6. Strathglass were well served by keeper Pam MacLeod and scorers Hazel Hunter and Clarrie Murdoch in what was an enjoyable match to watch, played in a great spirit. Skye switched the goal-keeping duties between Ilana Paterson and Kristen MacBeth and both did well. Nicola MacSween and Caitlin MacLean were also impressive whilst Lorna MacRae looked the most assured player on the park.
