08 May 2011 Six teams won thorough to the second round of shinty’s premier competition, the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup, following the first round ties played on Saturday 7 May 2011. Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – First Round Bute, Glasgow Mid Argyll, Kinlochshiel, Lochaber, Lochcarron and Taynuilt are all through to Monday’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup second round draw where they will be joined by the 10 teams from the Scottish Hydro Premier Division. Bute won the battle of the Islanders when they beat a depleted Skye Camanachd side 6-1 on Rothesay. Gordon MacMillan put Bute ahead on just 9 minutes and Robert Walker grabbed a hat-trick whilst Hector Whitelaw scored two – one from the penalty spot. Skye’s consolation came when Ally MacDonald scored his first goal for the Skye Camanachd first team. Goals from Neil Fraser and Fraser MacVicar gave Marine Harvest North Division 1 leaders Kinlochshiel a 2-1 win over Beauly at Kirkton. Barrie MacDonald netted a spectacular 35 goal for the visitors in what was a very close game. Lochcarron had a successful trip to Kilmory as a Kieran Murray double gave them a 2-0 triumph. However Murray’s afternoon ended on a sour note when he had to leave the field after suffering a facial knock in an off-the-ball incident. Taynuilt secured the surprise result of the round as a Stuart Scott hat-trick gave them a 4-3 win over Inverness at the Bught Park. Glasgow Mid Argyll beat Strathglass 4-0 at Yoker. Fulton Ross and Craig Anderson each scored twice. Ben Delaney scored a hat-trick as Lochaber beat Oban Celtic 8-0 at Ganavan. Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup – Second Round Second half goals from Will Cowie, Iain MacLellan and Jordan Murchison gave Skye Camanachd a 3-1 derby win over Kinlochshiel in their 12 noon throw up at Kirkton. There is another derby at Balgate where Marine Harvest North Division 2 side Lovat beat Beauly from Marine Harvest North Division 3 by 3-2. Ryan Fraser and a Steven Cameron double were on target for the home side whilst Robbie Tuach scored twice for Beauly. Aberdeen University secured a place in the next round with a 7-0 win against Inveraray at the Winterton. Former Skye Camanachd player Kenny Campbell scored a hat-trick for the Students. Tayforth beat Caberfeidh 3-2 at Castle Leod. Kirk Taylor and Gary MacLennan netted for Cabers whilst Calum Barton, Kenny Campbell and Neil Shearer secured a surprise victory for the visitors. Roddy MacColl was a hat-trick hero as Kyles Athletic beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 7-0 in their 12 noon throw up at Yoker. Glenurquhart were 3-2 winners in the battle of the Glens between Glengarry and Glenurquhart at Invergarry. Stuart Morrison netted the winner 6 minutes from time. Kevin Thain returned to the Kingussie reserve side and scored five times as they beat Lochside Rovers 7-2 at the Dell. Lochaber had a walk-over as Strathglass were unable to raise a side for their trip to Spean Bridge. Scottish Hydro Premier Division League leaders Kyles Athletic maintained their 5 point lead at the top of the table with a 3-0 win over newly promoted Kilmallie at Tighnabruaich. Dunkie Kerr put them ahead 3 minutes from the break and second half goals from Fraser MacDonald and Roddy MacDonald confirmed their victory. Kingussie took a first minute lead throuigh Ronald Ross against Inveraray at the Dell. However the visitors were level a couple of minutes later through Neil Campbell. Inveraray went 2-1 up on 13 minutes when Campbell continued his good scoring run with his second of the game. A James Hutchison strike 5 minutes from the break ensured the sides went into the break all square. The winning goal was scored by – who else - Ronald Ross and he put the Kings 3-2 ahead after 50 minutes. Kingussie stay in second place in the table. Fraser MacKintosh returned to the Newtonmore first team squad and he scored the only goal of the game after 70 minutes as Newtonmore beat Fort William 1-0 at An Aird. Fort William’s Alex Duncan was sent off by referee Billy Wotherspoon 5 minutes later. Lovat returned home to Balgate with both points following their 2-1 win over Oban Camanachd at Mossfield. Scott MacMillan put Oban Camanachd ahead after 33 minutes but Lovat substitute Fraser Gallager squared the game on 36 minutes. The game looked set to end in a share of the points until referee Dunkie Kerr awarded Lovat a penalty 8 minutes from time for a kick inside the D. Lovat had missed from the spot last weekend and Scotland U21 cap James MacPherson was given the responsibility this week. He made no mistake as he beat Gavin Stobbart to give his side a 2-1 win which lifts them into seventh place, level on points with Fort William, Oban Camanachd and Glenurquhart. Marine Harvest South Division 1 The prolific Gary Young bagged a brace as Ballachulish beat Aberdour 3-2 at Jubilee Park. Marine Harvest North Division 2 A goal in each half from Ryan Campbell and Jack Fraser gave Fort William a 2-0 win over Kilmallie in their 12 noon throw up at An Aird. Marine Harvest South Division 2 Stuart Robertson and Kenny Michie were amongst the goals as Ballachulish ran out 4-0 winners over Aberdour in their early throw up at Jubilee Park. Fourth place Col Glen were 1-0 winners over second place Bute thanks to a Peter Shuttleworth goal.. Marine Harvest North Division 3 An Iain Grant double helped Boleskine to a 3-1 win over Inverness at the Bught Park. Lochbroom were awarded the points as Lochcarron were unable to raise a team for their match. |
