09 April 2011 There was plenty of excitement from the first rounds of the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup and Balliemore Cup on Saturday 9 April 2011. Balliemore Cup - First Round Balliemore Cup holders Kinlochshiel are safely through to the next round following their 7-1 win at Kilmory. Finlay MacRae grabbed a hat-trick whilst Neil Fraser got a double. Duncan MacDonald scored twice as Ballachulish secured an impressive 3-1 win over Glasgow Mid Argyll at Jubilee Park. A Crisdean Finlayson double gave Lochcarron a 2-0 win at Taynuilt. Lochaber were too strong for Inverness at the Bught Park, finally running out 8-0 winners. Ben Delaney followed up his 8 second strike against Ballachulish last week with a hat-trick whilst Shaun Nicolson scored twice. 2008 Balliemore Cup winners Skye Camanachd are through to the quarter finals following a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Strathglass at Cannich. Alan Palmer and Robbie MacDougall had twice put Skye ahead during the regulation 90 minutes only for veteran Robert Geddes to peg back the Islanders lead each time. The outcome was eventually settled by the dreaded penalty shoot-out and Skye full back Steven Morrison crashed the crucial fifth penalty into the back of the net to give Skye their first win of the season. Oban Celtic were unable to raise a team for their trip north to Castle Leod so Caberfeidh are given passage into the next round. Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup – First Round It took extra time to separate Skye Camanachd and Fort William at Pairc nan Laoch Portree. Jordan Murchison scored four times and Ally MacDonald got the other as the Islanders ran out 5-3 winners. A Lewis MacLennan penalty five minutes from time helped Glenurquhart to a 4-3 win over Newtonmore at Drumnadrochit. A Conor Cormack hat-trick put Beauly on their way to an extra-time 5-4 win over Lochcarron at Braeview Park. Alan Knox scored four times as Lochaber ran out 7-1 winners against Inverness in the 12.30pm throw up at the Bught Park. Arran Ross, Garry MacLennan and Graham MacGregor were on target as Caberfeidh were 3-0 winners over Boleskine at Farr. Aberdeen University had a walk-over as travel difficulties prevented Lochbroom from travelling east. David Arnott and Jamie MacDonald were on target as Tayforth were 2-0 winners in their 12 noon throw up at Taynuilt. Inveraray won 3-1 at Col Glen with John Slaughter scoring twice. There were only 3 North v South clashes in the first round draw. Marine Harvest North Division 2 bottom side Kilmallie went down 5-1 to Marine Harvest South Division 1 leaders Lochside Rovers at the Canal Parks. Matt Rippon scored twice for the visitors. Kingussie eventually ran out 5-3 extra time winners over Strachur at the Dell. Rory Borthwick and Rory MacGregor each scored twice for the home side. Steven Cameron scored five times as Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Glengarry beat Bute 9-0 in Invergarry. The tie between the SCOTS and holders Lovat will take place at a later date. Glasgow Mid Argyll, Kinlochshiel, Kyles Athletic and Strathglass have all received byes into the second round which takes place on Saturday 7 May 2011. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Kyles Athletic went four points clear at the top of the table with a 3-2 win over Fort William at An Aird. Dunkie Kerr put the visitors ahead after 20 minutes but John MacLeod levelled 60 seconds later. Thomas Whyte put Kyles ahead again on the half hour mark and Grant Irvine scored a crucial goal a minute before the break to make it 3-1. Gary Innes pulled a goal back to make it 3-2 on 53 minutes but the visitors held on for another good win. Greg Matheson netted four times as Lovat beat bottom side Glenorchy 6-0 at Balgate. Glenurquhart have found goals hard to come by this season but they hit target this weekend with a 5-1 win over Kilmallie at Drumnadrochit. Ruairidh Cameron and Calum Macaulay each scored doubles. A Grant Griffin double helped Inveraray to a 3-1 win over Oban Camanachd at Mossfield. It was honours even in first senior Badenoch derby of the season when Newtonmore drew 2-2 with Kingussie at the Eilan. Craig Dawson scored the only goal of the first half when he fired past Michael Ritchie after 22 minutes. Glen MacKintosh made it 1-1 just a minute into the second half and he put ‘More into the lead on 65 minutes. However Paul Gow hit a spectacular 30 yard leveller 6 minutes from time to earn Kingussie a well earned draw. Newtonmore’s Paul MacArthur was sent off by referee Graham Cameron during a fraught closing period of the game. Marine Harvest South Division 1 Bute went top of Marine Harvest North Division 1 with a 9-0 win over Aberdour at Rothesay. Roberto Zavaroni and Stuart Strathie each notched doubles but Robert Walker went one better with a hat-trick. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Kinlochshiel came out on top in their rearranged match against Lovat at Kirkton. Oliver MacRae opened the scoring and Ross Fraser, Steven Isles and Donald Nixon each got doubles whilst Jimmy MacKenzie scored for the visitors. Marine Harvest North Division 3 Strathglass enjoyed a morale-boosting 4-3 win over Ardnamurchan at Cannich. JD MacMaster got a hat trick for Ardnamurchan but Seth Jones did like-wise for Strathglass and former Skye Camanachd youth player Alex Latton got the other. |
