Skye Camanachd 5 Lochaber 1. | |
05 April 2011 The Skye Camanachd second team beat Lochaber 5-1 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree in Marine Harvest North Division 2 on Saturday 2 April 2011. Skye Camanachd manager Davie MacVicar and his assistant Murdo Morrison totally revamped the side which lost 8-1 to Kingussie the previous week. Jamie Gannon, John MacLeod, Stevie MacKinnon, Will Cowie and Mark Mortimer all came in to a 17 man squad. Injury ruled out Neil John Campbell and Calum Gibb whilst Jamie Gannon took over in goal from U14 keeper Iain MacLeod. There were 5 changes to the starting line-up however it was the positional changes which really caught the eye with only full centre Darryl Macintosh and wing forward Iain MacLellan starting in the same positions as the previous week. Ally MacDonald, who had been playing in attack, reverted to the full back position he played in his U14 days. John MacLeod moved to wing back from his usual place in goal whilst Stevie MacKinnon, who was in the U14 side last season, made a very creditable debut in defence. Iain Grant took up the buckshee back role whilst Paul MacKinnon and John MacKenzie joined Macintosh in midfield. Allan MacKinnon started at buckshee forward and there was a starting place for U17 player John Gillies. Regular full back David Grant was moved to full forward. Lochaber were missing some of their regular squad including Johnny Cameron and Brennan MacDonald who was on first team duty and Barrie MacDonald. Skye took the lead after just 10 minutes. There seemed little danger when full centre Darryl Macintosh collected the ball just right of the centre spot but he crashed the ball goalwards it ended up in the Lochaber net, off keeper Calum Cameron’s caman. Lochaber responded immediately and forced a corner on their right. The corner was cleared by the Skye defence but the ball broke to Lochaber full centre Ryan Toal and his shot was saved with his feet by Skye keeper Jamie Gannon who cleared the ball for another corner. Lochaber kept the pressure on the Skye goal and Gannon was forced to make another good stop from Scott Knox and this time Ally MacDonald cleared for a third successive corner. However when this corner was played in, the Skye defence cleared the danger and the ball was played up-field to Allan MacKinnon who went on a good run towards goal before being upended by Jamie MacIntyre. David Grant slipped the free hit to Allan MacKinnon but keeper Cameron made a good save with his feet. Skye went 2-0 in front on 14 minutes. There was a scramble in the goal area and Iain MacLellan managed to knock the ball to David Grant and he slotted the ball into the net. Lochaber claimed that MacLellan had committed an infringement before playing in Grant but referee Donald MacRae and goal judge Daniel MacRae were in agreement that the goal should stand. The game swung from end to end and only a last ditch challenge from debutant Stevie MacKinnon denied Duncan MacKinnon a goal on 17 minutes. A minute later Allan MacKinnon, Iain MacLellan and Paul MacKinnon combined to set up a chance for David Grant but the full forward’s effort whistled past the post. Just 60 seconds later, Skye wing centre John MacKenzie drifted a 40 yard drive goalwards and the ball went just past the post. Skye youngster Will Cowie came on in place of Iain MacLellan after 20 minutes. Jamie Gannon made a good save when Duncan MacKinnon blasted in a shot after 29 minutes and the Skye keeper cleared the ball for a corner. Skye produced the move of the game on 32 minutes. Darryl Macintosh collected the ball in midfield and cracked a terrific pass to David Grant on the Skye right. Grant crossed the ball into the goal area where John Gillies played a delightful flick which set up Allan MacKinnon but his first time effort went just past the post. Lochaber got themselves right back into the lead on 47 minutes when Duncan MacKinnon lost his marker and tucked the ball low into the net from the edge of the D to make it 2-1. However Skye restored their two goal advantage just a couple of minutes later. Paul MacKinnon played a short corner from the right to Will Cowie. Cowie spotted David Grant in space and he blasted the ball into the net for his second goal of the game. Skye wing back Stevie MacKinnon made a good challenge on Duncan MacKinnon after 57 minutes to preserve Skye’s two goal lead. This was to be MacKinnon’s final piece of action as he was replaced by another youngster, Mark Mortimer. Lochaber full back Danny Delaney was forced to leave the field of play on 66 minutes when he stopped a Will Cowie rocket shot with an unorthodox part of his body. However after receiving treatment, Delaney later returned to the field of play at full forward. David Grant and Will Cowie were linking up well and Grant set up a chance for the youngster on 68 minutes. Cowie’s snap-shot was saved by keeper Cameron and Grant could only find the side-net with the rebound. Skye extended their lead on 71 minutes. Allan MacKinnon came deep to take possession. He played the ball forward to David Grant who turned marker Martin Porter before shooting home to complete his hat-trick. Daniel Morrison came on in midfield as Skye’s final substitution and Lochaber also introduced substitutes Stuart Matheson and Shaun Kane. Skye made it 5-1 just 10 minutes from the end. Will Cowie got on the end of a ball from the left and almost knocked it over keeper Cameron. The keeper managed to stop the ball but it dropped behind him onto the goal-line and John Gillies rushed in to tap the ball into the net. David Grant almost got his fourth goal in 84 minutes when he got onto the end of another flowing Skye move. Darryl Macintosh played a neat ball to Will Cowie who quickly sent a sweeping back-hand pass into the path of David Grant and he missed the target by inches. Allan MacKinnon showed great determination to track back and match a Conor Sweeny run on 86 minutes. MacKinnon’s tackle gave Lochaber a shy on the right from which found Duncan MacKinnon, who was the visitor’s liveliest forward, but his shot rose over the bar.
