27 March 2011 Skye Camanachd lost 11-0 to Newtonmore at the Eilan in the first round of the Co-operative MacTavish Cup on Saturday 26 March 2011. Skye Camanachd first team manager Aonghas MacDonald made three enforced changes from the side which lost to Strathglass on the opening day of the shinty season. Injury ruled out defenders AB Connor and Martin Bruce and midfielder Kerr Gibb. Shockie MacLennan had been expected to return to the squad but he was also missing with an ankle injury. Andrew Banks, Stewart Grant, Ally MacDonald, Paul MacKinnon and manager MacDonald came in to make up a 17 man squad. Newtonmore manager Norman MacArthur had a particularly strong pool to choose from with just Fraser MacKintosh missing. Skye competed well enough in the first half although they trailed 3-0 at the break to an 8 minute Steven MacDonald effort and a double from Danny MacRae on 30 and 40 minutes. Skye collapsed during the first 18 minutes of the second half. MacRae completed his hat-trick on 49 minutes and Glen MacKintosh added his name to the score-sheet a couple of minutes later to make it 5-0. Danny MacRae netted his fourth on 58 minutes before he was replaced by Drew MacDonald. David Cheyne bagged a double on 63 and 75 minutes to make it 8-0. One of Cheyne’s strikes was a blistering effort which flew into the roof of the Skye net. More were awarded a couple of late penalties by referee Evan MacRae. In both cases Skye keeper Michael Nicolson was penalised for falling on the ball. Steven MacDonald converted the first to grab his second goal of the game on 82 minutes whilst Glen MacKintosh completed his hat-trick from the spot 3 minutes later. Glen MacKintosh scored his fourth to make it 11-0 and complete his hat-trick on the stroke of full time. Skye will take heart from their first half performance but they simply found ‘More too hot to handle for long periods of the second half. Newtonmore are undoubtedly a major force in the game at the moment and they will take some stopping this season. Newtonmore now travel to Braeview Park to play Beauly in the quarter finals.
