06 March 2011 The 2011 shinty season started with a bang on Saturday 5 March 2011. Scottish Hydro Premier Division The top 3 sides in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division all won on the season’s opening day. A Danny MacRae hat-trick helped reigning champions Newtonmore to an impressive 6-2 win against Inveraray at the Winterton. Gary Innes scored twice as Fort William saw off Glenurquhart with a 3-0 win at An Aird. Thomas Borthwick scored twice as Kingussie beat Lovat 4-0 at the Dell. The surprise of the day was perhaps Oban Camanachd’s 3-1 win over Kilmallie at Canal Parks. Daniel MacIntyre, Lewis Cameron and Andrew MacCuish all scored for the visitors with John Stewart replying for the home side. Kyles Athletic romped to an 8-0 win over Glenorchy at Tighnabruaich. Dunkie Kerr scored a hat-trick whilst Thomas Whyte helped himself to a double. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kinlochshiel made a good start to the season with a 3-1 win over Caberfeidh at Kirkton. Keith MacRae scored twice whilst Neil Fraser got the other. Cabers countered with a 73 minute Martin MacDonald strike. Beauly returned from Spean Bridge with both points after an impressive 2-1 win over Lochaber. Goals from Conor Ross and Jamie MacLean for the visitors cancelled out Shaun Nicolson’s strike. A goal late in injury time from former Fort William player James Cameron earned Inverness a share of the points with a 1-1 draw against Lochcarron at the Bught Park. Strathglass, who finished bottom of Marine Harvest North Division 1 last season, had a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Skye Camanachd at Cannich. A goal in each half from Robbie Stokes and Ali MacAdam secured the win. Marine Harvest South Division 1 A Hector Whitelaw hat-trick meant recently relegated Bute got off to a great start with a 4-0 win at Aberdour. Young “Winkie” MacDougall was amongst the scorers as Lochside Rovers secured a resounding 5-1 home win over Kilmory. Ally MacKay and David Martin each scored doubles as Kyles Athletic beat Oban Celtic 4 1 in Oban. A goal from former Skye Camanachd player Dougie Rankin helped Ballachulish to a 4-3 victory at Taynuilt. Marine Harvest North Division 2 A David Wyldie hat-trick and a double form returning player Orsten Gardiner helped Newtonmore to an emphatic opening day 7-1 win over newly promoted Lochaber. A double from former Scotland international Steven Cameron helped Glengarry to a 3-1 win over Kinlochshiel at Invergarry. A Daniel Stewart hat-trick and a double Michael Sleazes contributed to Victor Smith’s Fort William side’s 7-4 win against Glenurquhart at Blairbeg. Former Lovat first team full back Martin Bell switched to the attack for the Kiltarlity sides home match against Kingussie. Bell scored twice but four goals from veteran Kevin Thain gave Kingussie a 5-2 win. A double from Allan MacKinnon and a John MacKenzie strike gave Skye Camanachd a 3-1 over Kilmallie at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Marine Harvest South Division 2 A Preston Shuttleworth hat-trick helped Co Glen to a 4-1 home win over Inveraray. Doubles from MacNicol and Robertson gave Strachur a 5-0 win over Ballachulish. Goals from Stewart Stirling and Jamie MacDonald saw Bute and Tayforth share the points following a 1-1 draw. The opening match of the shinty season saw Glasgow Mid Argyll put 11 goals past Aberdour in their early throw up. Ewan Forsyth, Gary Luke and Craig Anderson each scored hat-tricks. Marine Harvest North Division 3 New boys Lewis Camanachd announced their arrival in spectacular fashion when they took the lead against Beauly in the first minute at Braeview Park. Calum Stomper got the goal and Lewis held this advantage until the hour mark when David Groat levelled. A Calum Forbes double and strikes from Calum Morrison and Conor Cormack, who made a welcome return from injury, meant Beauly eventually ran out 5-1 winners. A double from former Skye Camanachd player Jamie Beaton helped Aberdeen University to a 3-0 win over Caberfeidh at Castle Leod. Ian Grant scored twice as Boleskine beat Inverness 2-0 at Farr. Gregor Cushnie scored a hat-trick as Lochcarron beat Strathglass 4-1 at Battery Park. Ardnamurchan were unable to raise a team for their visit to Lochbroom. |
