Skye Camanachd will enter a ladies team into the Womens Camanachd Association League for the first time in the 2011 shinty season.
The team will join in North Division 2 and will play their home games at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.
Team membership is open to all girls and women from the Skye and Lochalsh area who are interested in shinty. This means that women shinty players from Skye and Lochalsh will now be able to represent their own area for the first time.
The WCA League games are normally played on a Sunday however the Skye ladies will be seeking agreement with opposing teams to play their fixtures on a Saturday. It is hope that home games can be player following the afternoon’s men’s match. Initial contact with other women's teams has shown that they are open to this option.
North Division 2 League matches are normally 8-10 a-side, as agreed between the participating clubs.
There have been a number of girls playing shinty at Primary School level in Portree in recent years, coached by Peter Gordon and Fiona Gordon. Other schools on the Island have also competed in Primary School Girls’ Competitions and the senior team are now set to benefit from this.
Anyone interested in playing for the team or helping out on match days should contact Eoghan Stewart on 07815183841.
