Portree High School Girls Give Good Showing in Dingwall. | |
31 October 2010 The Portree High School girls’ shinty team finished in second place in the first round of the WCA North of Scotland Schools League in Dingwall on Thursday 28 October 2010. Portree were without North of Scotland U18 cap Nicola MacSween who was unavailable and Emma Nicolson and Katie MacDonald who are concentrating on their studies this year. Rosalind Lamond and Jennifer MacKinnon returned to the A squad after successfully co-captaining Portree B at the last tournament and they bring with them debutants Isabelle Law and Sarah Nicolson as well and Kristen MacBeth who all impressed in the last tournament. Helen Lamond returned to the Portree’s squad which had a strong look to it despite the absences thanks to the presence of Ilana Paterson, Lorna MacRae and Jenny Morrison who all represented the North of Scotland U18s earlier this month. Coach Eòghan Stewart was also able to can also call on the talents of Marie MacKinnon, Sophie Tinney and Caitlin MacLean which demonstrated the strength in depth of girls’ shinty in Skye at present. This was a magnificent team performance from Portree throughout the day. All the Portree goals were scored between Lorna MacRae and Caitlin MacLean with the exception of a penalty strike by regular keeper Sophie Tinney in the 4-0 win over Dingwall B. Portree fought back to earn a 1-1 draw with Kingussie thanks to a Lorna MacRae screamer. Portree also put in a terrific performance against league winners Lochaber before going down 1-0. Rosalind Lamont and Marie MacKinnon played particularly well and nullified the threat of Lochaber’s Beth MacDonald. Rosalind Lamont gave a captain’s performance whilst Sarah Nicolson put in a fine performance on her A team debut. Portree play-maker Lorna MacRae was the outstanding player through-out the day’s shinty.
