13 October 2010 The 2010 shinty season is drawing to a close with just 5 fixtures taking place on Saturday 9 October 2010. However the matches produced 34 goals – an average of almost 7 goals per game. Oban Camanachd completed shinty’s equivalent of “The Great Escape” when they beat Bute 2-1 at the Meadows, Rothesay. To read a full report on the match, click on the following link Bute 1 Oban Camanachd 2 Kingussie clinched third place in the league with a 4-1 win over Inveraray at the Dell to clinch third place in the table. The Kings were without Ronald Ross who served the second game of his 2 match suspension whilst Inveraray keeper Graeme MacPherson was playing his final game before moving abroad. Fraser Munro put Kingussie ahead after just 9 minutes but Inveraray levelled through Garry MacPherson on 22 minutes. With just 3 minutes of the half remaining, 18 year old Martin Dallas, promoted from the King’s second team, netted twice to give the home side a 3-1 interval lead. Thomas Borthwick scored the only goal of the second half after 75 minutes to give Kingussie the points and third place in the league. Kingussie brought on 16 year old Hamish Anderson, son of former player Davie Anderson, in place of goal scorer Munro. Roddy MacDonald ended the season on a high when he scored 5 first half goals to help Kyles Athletic to a 6-3 win over Glasgow Mid Argyll. MacDonald’s strikes came after 5, 10, 20, 25 and 40 minutes. Dunkie Kerr put the visitors 6-0 ahead on the hour mark. A late Mid Argyll fight back saw Fulton Ross score on 65 minutes, Andy Mathie also netted a couple of minutes later and Gary Luke to make the final score 6-3 to the men from Tighnabruaich. The defeat means that Mid Argyll has lost 105 goals from their 18 league games this season – an average of almost 6 goals per game. The final match in Marine Harvest North Division 1 took place at Battery Park where Lochcarron hosted Lochaber. Both sides took the opportunity to experiment with the league title settled. Michael Delaney’ missed the game as he was looking after the club’s U17 side who had a London Shield semi final against Lochaber U17 at Invergarry on the same day. Lochaber were also without Danny Delaney, Brennan MacDonald, Connor Sweeney and Stuart Callison as they were also in U17 action. Wing forward Martin Johnston got the visitors off to a great start with a 6 minute goal. However Lochcarron’s Mark Sproule levelled on 28 minutes. Calum Cameron put Lochaber ahead again on 39 minutes and Martin Johnston added his second 3 minutes later to give Lochaber a 3-1 interval lead. Former Scotland Head Coach Fraser MacKenzie got the final touch to reduce Lochaber’s advantage to a single goal 5 minutes into the second half and Mark Sproule notched his second goal on 65 minutes to level the game at 3-3. Lochaber finished strongly though and Scottish international Neil MacDonald, who normally plays buckshee back, put Lochaber 4-3 up and Ben Delaney added his name to the score-sheet 60 seconds later. There was sill time for Neil MacDonald, who was obviously enjoying his ,ore advanced role, to score his second goal 5 minutes from time to give Lochaber a 6-3 victory. Lochaber finished in second place whilst Lochcarron are fifth in what is a huge improvement on last year’s bottom spot. Marine Harvest North Division 2 champions Glenurquhart travelled to Kirkton to play Kinlochshiel. The Glen were without several of their regular players including Kelvin MacKenzie and Ewan Brady as they were also taking part in the London Shiel semi final against Lochaber U17. However the Glen were able to call Neale Reid into their side and he scored 4 goals. Scott Kennedy put ‘Shiel ahead after 14 minutes and former Inverness player Stuart MacRae made it 2-0 just 3 minutes later. Neale Reid pulled a goal back on 35 minutes and he looked to have squared the game at the break when he netted a second time on 43 minutes. However Duncan MacRae scored on the stroke of half time to give the home side a 3-2 advantage. Scott Kennedy scored his second on 52 minutes to put ‘Shiel 4-2 up. Howver Glenurquhart fought back and Neale Reid scored his third and fourth goals on 56 and 70 minutes to earn the visitors a share of the points. Eirinn regained the Iomain Cholmcille when they beat Alba 15 (2-9) to 13 (13-0) in Galway.
