The Saturday Shinty Snapshot – 2 October 2010! | |
04 October 2010 Ahead of the weekly Shinty Round Up, the headlines from the shinty matches played on Saturday 2 October 2010 are……….. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Newtonmore are the 2010 Scottish Hydro Premier Division champions. Norman MacArthur’s side knew that they would take the title if they avoided defeat against second place Fort William at An Aird in both side’s final game of the season. Heavy rain pre-match made the under-foot conditions very difficult. Although possession was even during the first half, ‘More came closest to scoring, rattling the frame of the goal twice and forcing Fort keeper Paul MacKay to produce a brilliant save from David Cheyne. ‘More were the better side in the second period though and they got their reward 10 minutes from time when Danny MacRae slipped his marker James Clark and ran through on goal where he coolly rolled the ball past the advancing MacKay to send the large visiting support into raptures. Newtonmore have only conceded 10 goals in their 18 league games this season and they saw out the remaining minutes to take the title to the Eilan for the first time in 25 years. Match referee Graham Irving deserves a mention for his sensible handling of the game and there were no bookings. Elsewhere in the league, Kingussie pressed their case for a third place finish with an exciting 4-3 win over Kyles Athletic at the Dell. An early double from Thomas Borthwick put the home side 2-0 up before Kyles’ Mathew MacColl pulled a goal back on 25 minutes. MacColl then levelled the game from the penalty spot before he completed his hat-trick to put his side 3-2 ahead. However a strong finish from Kingussie saw James Hutchison level the game with a well taken 70 minute goal before Fraser Munro scored the winner 3 minutes from time when he was first to a rebound after Kyles’ keeper Kenny MacDonald saved well from Thomas Borthwick. Bute were unable to secure the point that would have guaranteed their top flight status when they went down 2-1 to Inveraray at the Winterton. Inveraray went 2-0 up within the first 10 minutes with goals from Grant Griffin and Ewan MacMurdo. However a Robert Walker goal on the stroke of half time gave the Islanders hope. There was no scoring in the second half so Bute will now host Oban Camanachd in a match which will decide which of these sides will be relegated. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kilmallie are the Marine Harvest North Division 1 champions following their convincing 6-0 win over Caberfeidh at Canal Parks. Liam MacDonald settled home fan nerves with a 12 minute strike whilst his side raced into a 4-0 interval lead thanks to a Michael Rodger double and a John Stewart strike. Second half goals from Fraser Massie and a brilliant swerving 35 yard strike from Martin Stewart completed the scoring. Kinlochshiel took the honours in the local derby against Lochcarron at Kirkton. Scotland senior player Finlay MacRae grabbed 4 of his side’s goals whilst international stand-by player Keith MacRae scored twice. Fraser MacVicar got the other whilst Kieran Murray replied for Lochcarron. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Glenurquhart have taken the Marine Harvest North Division 2 title for the second consecutive season following their 2-1 win against Lovat at Blairbeg. Full forward Gregor McCormack gave the Glen a 12 minutes lead whilst Kelvin MacKenzie made it 2-0 just 7 minutes later. Scotland U21 cap James MacPherson held his nerve to score a retaken penalty a minute from the break – the second time he has done so at the same venue this season. Earlier in the day, Glengarry’s title challenge faltered when they were beaten 5-0 by Kingussie at the Dell. Kevin Thain grabbed a hat-trick and Rory Borthwick and an own goal completed the win. |
