The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 4 September 2010. | |
07 September 2010 Newtonmore took a giant step towards the Scottish Hydro Premier Division title with victory over Kingussie and Glasgow Mid Argyll beat Kyles Athletic to win the Bullough Cup Final at the Winterton on Saturday 4 September 2010. Glasgow Mid Argyll won the 2010 Bullough Cup with a 3-1 triumph over Kyles Athletic at the Winterton. The sides had met twice in the league this season. Kyles were 3-1 winners when they met on the opening day of the season at Tighnabruaich and they then drew 3-3 at Yoker at the beginning of May. Kyles have had the more successful league campaign, topping the table and winning promotion to Marine Harvest North Division 1 but this was to be Mid Argyll’s day. Donald Colville put them ahead on 20 minutes and he added a second a couple of minutes before the break. Gordon Whyte reduced the deficit 5 minutes into the second half but Colville went on to complete his hat-trick with a 65 minute strike to spark the Glasgow celebrations. The match of the day in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division was the Badenoch derby between Newtonmore and Kingussie at the Eilan. Newtonmore took a massive step towards winning the Scottish Hydro Premier Division title with a thumping 6-0 win. The Kings were without talisman Ronald Ross – who had scored all 8 of his sides goals against ‘more this season - and their performance dipped well below the standard that has seen them go on a long unbeaten run. Newtonmore took advantage and rattled up an early lead through a Glen MacKintosh double on 7 and 10 minutes. David Cheyne also helped himself to a double on 19 and 36 minutes and by the time Danny MacRae gave Norman MacArthur’s side a 5-0 interval lead with a goal on 38 minutes, Newtonmore were out of sight. MacRae added his second goal on 52 minutes to make it 6-0. In fact if it had not been for some good saves from Andrew Borthwick, the winning margin could have been greater. Newtonmore now has away matches against Inveraray and Fort William and 2 wins will give them the title. A Grant Irvine hat-trick helped Kyles Athletic to a 6-0 win in the 1pm throw up over an under-strength Glenurquhart team. Both sides were on form going in to the game. Kyles sat third having amassed 4 wins and a draw in their last 5 league fixtures whilst the Glen had 2 wins and a draw from their last 3 fixtures. Crucially, Glenurquhart were without several players. Keeper Stuart MacKintosh was away promoting his band Schiehallion’s new CD, Scottish internationalist Jim Barr, Calum Fraser and Andrew MacDonald. Their stretched resources gave youngster Kelvin MacKenzie an appearance after some fine second team appearances and first team manager Jim Barr also played. To Glen’s credit, there was only one goal in the first half scored by Dunkie Kerr after 8 minutes. However Kyles upped the ante in the second period and Grant Irvine continued his good season with a hat-trick on 55, 70 and 75 minutes. Late strikes from Colin MacColl on 85 minutes and Donald Irvine 3 minutes from time completed the scoring. Oban Camanachd picked up a valuable point following a 2-2 draw with Lovat at Mossfield but they may well regret losing a 2-0 lead after an Iain MacMillan double on 7 and 14 minutes put them in front at the break. However Lovat fought back in the second half and Greg Matheson – who played for the Lovat U17 side on Tuesday and Friday during the week – scored twice on 50 and 63 minutes to earn a draw which secured his side’s top flight status. Oban Camanachd now trail second bottom Bute by 3 points with both sides having 3 games to play. The top 2 sides in Marine Harvest North Division 1 were both away from home. Kilmallie continued their clinical spree in front of goal with a 5-1 victory over Beauly at Braeview Park where John Stewart scored a hat-trick for the second consecutive weekend. Kilmallie had Peter Carmichael available again but Martin Graham was missing as he was running the Ben Nevis Hill Race. John Stewart opened the scoring on 16 minutes but Beauly player / manager Stephen MacLean led by example when he made it 1-1 just 16 minutes later. However the lead didn’t last long as the impressive Stewart added his second a couple of minutes later. Liam MacDonald made it 3-1 on 29 minutes and John Stewart went on to complete his hat-trick on 54 minutes. Kilmallie midfielder Mark MacPherson burst forward to score from the left 3 minutes from time to keep his side in the title hunt. Lochaber were also on the road as they headed for Castle Leod to play Caberfeidh. Michael Delaney’s side was under-strength when they beat Strathglass last weekend but they had more options this week. The Spean Bridge side took a 2-0 first half lead thanks to a Shaun Nicolson double on 34 and 39 minutes. The second was a penalty awarded by referee Russell Ross. However a second half Iain MacDonald goal on 67 minutes ensured a nervy finish for Michael Delaney’s side but they held on to take both points to stay a point ahead of Kilmallie with 3 matches remaining. Skye Camanachd won the local derby at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree when they beat Lochcarron 5-3. After a goalless first half, Duncan “Ach” MacRae put Shiel ahead 3 minutes into the second period whilst David Falconer made it 2-0 a couple of minutes later. Robert Geddes pulled a goal back for ‘Glass on 75 minutes but a late Fraser MacVicar double gave Kinlochshiel a 4-1 victory. Strathglass now have to win their final 2 games to avoid finishing bottom of the table. There was one match in Marine Harvest South Division 1 as Kilmory went some way to cementing their third place position when they beat Ballachulish 3-1. Steven Gilmour scored twice for the home side with Hal Jones getting the other. Kieran Sweeney scored for Ballachulish. Neither Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Glengarry, second place Newtonmore or third place Glenurquhart were in action. Therefore fourth place Fort William had the chance to go top of the table with a win over Kinlochshiel at Kirkton in their final game of the season. This was the second consecutive Saturday that these sides had met in the league with the Fort winning 3-0 at An Aird last weekend. Daniel Stewart gave Fort William the lead after just 8 minutes in this noon throw up. Stewart added his second on 14 minutes and completed his hat-trick 7 minutes later. At 3-0 up against a weakened Shiel side, the Fort looked in control but the home side started their fight back on 34 minutes when Neil Fraser pulled a goal back. Fraser also went on to complete his hat-trick with goals on 40 and 48 minutes to square the match. Daniel Stewart scored his fourth on 72 minutes and Neil Fraser did like-wise 3 minutes later to make it 4-4. The winner came on 78 minutes when Scott Kennedy delighted the home support as he made it 5-4 to ‘Shiel. Lovat and Skye Camanachd shared the points following a 0-0 draw at Balgate. Lochaber narrowed Aberdeen University’s lead at the top Marine Harvest North Division 3 to just 2 points with an emphatic 9-1 win over Lochbroom at Spean Bridge. U17 player Stuart Callison scored 4 goals whilst Kenny Forsyth bagged a double. Pat Toal, Duncan MacKinnon and Scott Knox got the others whilst Steven Bellshaw scored Lochbroom’s consolation goal. Aberdeen University have completed their league programme and this league cannot be decided by goal difference so a play-off remains a distinct possibility. Lochaber play their final match this weekend at home to Boleskine and a win for the Spean Bridge men will force a title / promotion meeting with Aberdeen University. |
