The Saturday Shinty Snapshot – 4 September 2010! | |
04 September 2010 Ahead of the weekly Shinty Round Up, the headlines from the shinty matches played on Saturday 4 September 2010 are……….. Bullough Cup Final Glasgow Mid Argyll won the 2010 Bullough Cup with a 3-1 triumph over Kyles Athletic at the Winterton. Donald Colville was the Mid Argyll hero with a hat-trick whilst Gordon Whyte replied for Kyles. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Newtonmore took a massive step towards winning the Scottish Hydro Premier Division title with a thumping 6-0 win over Kingussie at the Eilan. The Kings were without talisman Ronald Ross and their performance dipped well below the standard that has seen them go on a long unbeaten run. Newtonmore took advantage and rattled up a 5-0 interval lead through an early Glen MacKintosh double, two from David Cheyne and a Danny MacRae goal. MacRae added a second goal 7 minutes into the second half. Norman MacArthur’s side now has away matches against Inveraray and Fort William and 2 wins will give them the title. A Grant Irvine hat-trick helped Kyles Athletic to a 6-0 win over an under-strength Glenurquhart side. Dunkie Kerr scored the only goal of the first half and late strikes from Colin MacColl and Donald Irvine sealed the win Oban Camanachd picked up a valuable point following a 2-2 draw with Lovat at Mossfield. However they may regret losing a 2-0 lead after an Iain MacMillan double put them in front at the break. However Lovat fought back in the second half and Greg Matheson – who played for the Lovat U17 side on Tuesday and Friday during the week – scored twice in the second 45 minutes to earn the draw which secured their top flight status. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Lochaber remain a point ahead at the top of the table following their 2-1 win over Caberfeidh at Castle Leod. The Spean Bridge side took a 2-0 first half lead thanks to a Shaun Nicolson double – the second which came from the penalty spot. However a second half Iain MacDonald goal ensured a nervy finish for Michael Delaney’s side but they held on to take both points. Kilmallie continued their clinical spree in front of goal with a 5-1 win against Beauly at Braeview Park. John Stewart scored a hat-trick for the second consecutive weekend. Skye Camanachd enjoyed a 5-2 derby win over Lochcarron at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Somhairle MacDonald gave Skye a first minute lead but Mark Sproule equalised within 60 seconds. Alan Palmer completed a one-two with Danny Morrison to restore Skye’s advantage on 7 minutes and a deflected Iain Morrison strike made it 3-1 on 11 minutes. Iain MacKenzie made it 3-2 on 19 minutes but youngster Jordan Murchison restored Skye’s 2 goal advantage with a sweet 36 minute strike for his first senior goal. Murchison added his second when he completed a sweeping Skye move on 71 minutes and although an Andrew Slaughter goal 5 minutes later made it 5-3, Skye picked up the points to move up to fifth place in the table. Kinlochshiel went into their home meeting with bottom side Strathglass minus several regular players including brothers Finlay, Keith and John MacRae. After a goalless first half, Duncan “Ach” MacRae put Shiel ahead 3 minutes into the second period whilst David Falconer made it 2-0 a couple of minutes later. Robert Geddes pulled a goal back for ‘Glass on 75 minutes but a late Fraser MacVicar double gave Kinlochshiel a 4-1 victory. Strathglass now have win their final 2 games to avoid finishing bottom of the table. Marine Harvest South Division 1 A Steven Gilmour double helped third place Kilmory to a 3-1 win over Ballachulish. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Daniel Stewart scored 4 times for Fort William at Kirkton but the An Aird side went down 5-4 to Kinlochshiel. Neil Fraser scored 4 for the home side whilst Scott Kennedy got the other. An under-strength Skye Camanachd side did well to earn a point with a 0-0 draw against Lovat at Balgate. The Islanders missed a penalty and they introduced 13 year old Will Cowie at half time for his reserve team debut. It’s appropriate that young Cowie should make his debut against Lovat as they were the team that his Grandfather Willie Cowie starred for in the 1950s. Marine Harvest North Division 3 Lochaber narrowed Aberdeen University’s lead at the top of the table to 2 points with an emphatic 9-1 win over Lochbroom at Spean Bridge. U17 player Stuart Callison scored 4 goals whilst Kenny Forsyth bagged a double. |
