The Saturday Shinty Snapshot – 21 August 2010! | |
22 August 2010 Ahead of the weekly Shinty Round Up, the headlines from the shinty matches played on Saturday 21 August 2010 are……….. Artemis Macaulay Cup Final Kingussie ended Inveraray’s dreams of 3 successive Artemis Macaulay Cup successes with a 4-3 extra time victory at Mossfield. Inveraray drew first blood with a Neil Andrew goal after just 14 minutes. However Ronald Ross levelled after 54 minutes and he squared the match again 5 minutes from time after Russell MacKinlay had put Inveraray 2-1 up on 82 minutes. Ross netted an extra time double after 91 and 96 minutes to put the King’s 4-2 up and although MacKinlay added his second on 105 minutes, Kingussie held on to lift the cup. Kingussie keeper Andrew Borthwick was named man of the match following a string of fine saves. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Fort William’s title aspirations suffered a blow following their 2-1 defeat to Kyles Athletic at An Aird. Gordie MacKinnon gave the Fort the lead after 6 minutes but goals from Duncan Kerr after 20 minutes and the impressive Grant Irvine 5 minutes into the second half ensured the points travelled south. The Fort now trail leaders Newtonmore by 2 points with a game in hand as the title race reaches the home straight. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Skye Camanachd became the first side to beat Kinlochshiel on their own pitch this season when they won the Friday night west coast derby. Skye started well in the blustery conditions but Shiel took a 2 goal first half lead thanks to a John MacRae strike and a penalty from Finlay MacRae. Somhairle MacDonald pulled a goal back, also from the penalty spot on 54 minutes and the Islanders won the game with 2 goals in 2 minutes. First wing centre Neil MacVicar sent a terrific 30 drive into the top right hand corner of the net to level the game after 70 minutes. Then, just 60 seconds later, Somhairle MacDonald laid the ball off to Iain Nicolson and he finished in some style to give Skye the points. Honours were even in the division’s match of the day at Canal Parks where Kilmallie and Lochaber drew 1-1. After a goalless first half, John Stewart put the home side ahead on 75 minutes but Shaun Nicolson levelled 2 minutes from time. Lochaber had defender Neil MacDonald ordered off by referee Ron Kennedy late in the game. A 5 minute strike from Gregor Cushnie gave Lochcarron the lead over Caberfeidh at Castle Leod. However a late Lee Nicol double gave Cabers the points. Doubles from player / manager Steven MacLean and Barrie MacDonald helped Beauly to a 7-3 win over Inverness at the Bught. Marine Harvest South Division 1 The match between third top Kilmory and third bottom Taynuilt was postponed because of the Artemis Macaulay Cup Final as was the clash between Ballachulish and Lochside Rovers at Jubilee Park. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Leaders Glengarry’s title chance suffered a blow when they went down 3-0 to Fort William in the noon throw up at An Aird. The Fort benefited from the inclusion of Duncan Rodger and he put his side ahead after 15 minutes. Michael Slezas made it 2-0 on the hour mark and Daniel Stewart added a third a couple of minutes later. Second place Glenurquhart ran out 7-0 winners over Kilmallie at Blairbeg. All of the Glen scorers play for their U17 side. U14 starlet Ewan Brady bagged a hat-trick with goals in the first, 62 and 63 minutes. Ewan Menzies also got in on the act with a trio on 56, 83 and a goal in the final minute. Daniel MacKintosh also scored 2 minutes from the break. Newtonmore beat Beauly 9-1 at Braeview Park. Chris Sellar netted 4 times – twice in each half – for the visitors. Beauly had defender Scott MacLeod sent off. Lovat ran out 6-1 winners against Kinlochshiel at Balgate. Lewis Tawse gave the home side a 15 minutes lead and James MacPherson, Duncan Davidson and Jimmy MacKenzie all netted in the first half whilst Greg Matheson added a second half double. U14 starlet Oliver MacRae scored ‘Shiel’s consolation. Marine Harvest South Division 2 Champions Kyles Athletic travelled to Fife to play second place Aberdour in the only match in the division and they returned home with both points following a 5-1 victory. Marine Harvest North Division 3 Lochaber missed out on the chance to close the gap on leaders Aberdeen University when their match against Boleskine was postponed as the Spean Bridge pitch was unplayable. Caberfeidh second team player / manager Archie Ritchie netted 4 times as his side enjoyed a 5-1 home win over Ardnamurchan. Inverness player / manager Allan MacLeod was again on target as his side had a good 2-1 win over Lochbroom at the Bught Park.
