The Saturday Shinty Snapshot – 31 July 2010! | |
31 July 2010 Ahead of the weekly Shinty Round Up, the headlines from the shinty matches played on Saturday 31 July 2010 are……….. Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Lovat won the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup with a 4-1 victory over Glenurquhart at the Eilan, Newtonmore. Lewis Tawse got Lovat off to a great start when he scored in the opening minute. However a Kelvin MacKenzie effort on the stroke of half time ensured the sides went into the break all square. Greg Matheson restored Lovat’s advantage on 52 minutes and his brother Jamie Matheson made it 3-1 just 4 minutes later. Greg Matheson added his second o 77 minutes with the Glen claiming the ball had not crossed the line but it was immaterial as Lovat ran out convincing winners. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Leaders Newtonmore were not in action so second place Fort William took the opportunity to reduce ‘More’s lead at the top of the table to 2 points when they beat Bute 4-3 in Rothesay. Goals from Gordie MacMillan and David Whitelaw put Bute 2-0 up. However 2 goals in 3 minutes just before the break from Gordie MacKinnon and James Clark leveled things at the interval. Robert Zavaroni put Bute ahead again 5 minutes into the second half. However the Fort produced another 2 goals in 3 minutes when MacKinnon added his second and Bryan Simpson made it 4-3 to the Fort. Third place Inveraray were too strong for bottom side Glasgow Mid Argyll at Yoker, running out emphatic 11-1 winners. Euan MacMurdo, Neil Andrews and Neil Campbell all scored hat-tricks for the visitors. Oban Camanachd’s relegation worries continue as a late Peter Currie double saw them lose 4-2 to Kyles Athletic in Tighnabruaich. The surprise result of the day was probably at the Dell where Kingussie and Lovat shared the points with a 2-2 draw. All the goals came in the first half as Fraser Gallagher put the visitors ahead after 2 minutes but a Ronald Ross double gave Kingussie the advantage. Ross also hit the post 4 times but it was Gallagher who scored his second to earn Lovat a valuable point in what was a good day for his club Marine Harvest North Division 1 Lochaber go top of the league on goal difference following their 5-1 win over Beauly at Braeview Park. The match of the day in this division was in Portree where Skye Camanachd and Kilmallie shared the points. Liam MacDonald put Kilmallie ahead after 14 minutes but Allan MacKinnon made it 1-1 on 20 minutes. Kilmallie regained the lead through international striker John Stewart, who was just back from his honeymoon, but when Kenny Campbell was brought down inside the D in the last minute, he picked himself up and fired the ball past Kevin Toye in the Kilmallie goal to make the final score 2-2. Marine Harvest South Division 1 Champions Glenorchy beat Taynuilt 3-2 to maintain their impressive 100% record in the league. This was a fiery match and if Glenorchy win their final fixture in Oban against Lochside Rovers on 14 August 2010, then they will have a perfect record of 12 wins out of 12 in the league this season. Inveraray were been boosted by last week’s victory over Kilmory and this week they beat Lochside Rovers 5-1 at the Winterton. They had Russell MacKinlay in their side again and he scored but Gordon Pirie grabbed the headlines with a hat-trick. John MacKenzie got the other whilst David Devine replied for Lochside Rovers. Kenny Wotherspoon grabbed a hat-trick as second top Oban Celtic beat second bottom Ballachulish 5-3. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Glengarry increased their lead at the top of the table with a 4-1 win over an under-strength Skye Camanachd side at Invergarry. Steven Cameron bagged a hat-trick for the home side and Stuart Gregory got the other. Jordan Murchison netted a fabulous 25 yard strike for Skye a minute from time. A first half Kevin Thain hat-trick ensured Beauly went down 4-1 to Kingussie at Braeview Park. Beauly first team manager Steven MacLean was on target for the home side but a late Martin Dallas strike sealed his side’s win. Kilmallie lost 3-2 to Fort William in their local derby at Canal Parks. The match between Bute and Glasgow Mid Argyll in Rothesay was postponed. Marine Harvest North Division 3 Aberdeen University made the long trip west to play bottom side Ardnamurchan and returned home with both points following a 6-1 win. Two former Skye Camanachd players were amongst the Student scorers with Kenny MacLeod getting a double and Jamie Beaton also scoring. Lochcarron had an excellent 3-2 win over Lochbroom in Ullapool. Alan Stewart put Lochcarron ahead in the first minute and Kieran Stark made it 2-0 on 34 minutes. James MacRae pulled a goal back for Lochbroom just 4 minutes later and Lorne Hughes made it 2-2 on the hour mark.
