The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 24 July 2010. | |
27 July 2010 The 2010 Artemis Macaulay Cup Final will be between Kingussie and Inveraray following the semi finals on Saturday 24 July 2010. The North semi final of the Artemis Macaulay Cup saw Kingussie and Fort William clash at the Bught Park. Kingussie were still without the injured Iain Borthwick, Louis Munro, Rory Fraser and Ally MacLeod. Fraser Munro was unavailable as he is on holiday and Ricky Grant was also absentee. Indeed the Kings had to pull young Thomas Borthwick back to wing centre. Fort William were keen to avoid another semi final defeat after losing out to Kilmallie in the last four of the MacTavish Cup. The Fort were at full strength with the exception of long term casualty Duncan Rodger. Fort William thumped Kingussie 6-0 when the sides met earlier in the season although Stevie Borthwick’s side has shown great improvement since then and this was emphasised in this tie. Ronald Ross put them ahead 2 minutes before the break and he added another 10 minutes into the second half. Fort William’s cause wasn’t helped when Steven Stewart, who had just come on as a substitute for John MacLeod, was sent off by referee Graham Cameron for taking a swipe at Ross as he lay on the ground. Paul Gow added a third Kings’ goal 3 minutes from the end and the winning margin could have been more had it not been for some fine saves from home keeper Paul MacKay. Inveraray and Bute met at Mossfield to decide the South representatives in the final. The sides drew 2-2 at Rothesay in May. And unfortunately for Bute, Roberto Zavaroni was serving the second game of a 2 match ban after receiving a red card against Lovat a fortnight ago. It was Inveraray who turned out convincing winners following a 9-0 triumph. Neil Andrew scored 4, Grant Griffin bagged a double and Garry MacPherson, Ewan MacMurdo and Lewis MacNicol got the others. Scottish Hydro Premier Division 1 leaders Newtonmore returned to the scene of their Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup defeat for the last 2 seasons when they faced Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich. Norman MacArthur will be glad to have Danny MacRae back in the line-up and he and his other forwards were in ruthless form against Glasgow Mid Argyll last weekend. Kyles were missing Donald Irvine who is working abroad but Roddy MacDonald is proving prolific since his switch to attack. It was Newtonmore who returned home with what could prove to be an important point following a 2-2 draw. Colin MacColl and Thomas Whyte both put Kyles ahead on 17 and 58 minutes only for David Cheyne to equalise each time on 25 and 85 minutes. Bottom side Glasgow Mid Argyll welcomed Lovat to Yoker. Mid Argyll suffered a heavy defeat to Newtonmore last weekend but they put up a great fight before going down 6-4 in this one. There was an early goal blitz with 7 goals in the first 22 minutes. Mark Bain gave the home side a 3 minute lead but Lovat’s Jamie Matheson made it 1-1 a couple of minutes later. His younger brother Greg Matheson put Lovat 2-1 up on 8 minutes whilst James MacPherson made it 3-1 on 10 minutes. James Matheson made it 4-1 just a minute later but Ben Simmister reduced their advantage with a 15 minute strike. Jamie Matheson completed an 11 minute hat-trick on 22 minutes to give Lovat a 5-2 lead at the break. Mark Bain scored his second 3 minutes into the second half and late scores from Lovat’s Greg Matheson on 88 minutes and Mid Argyll’s Alex Mathie 60 seconds later gave the visitors 2 priceless points in their quest to maintain their top flight status. Glenurquhart and Oban Camanachd met in a 12.30pm throw up at Blairbeg. Oban Camanachd were without the suspended David MacInnes. The home side recalled Iain MacDonald at full back which allowed John Barr to push on to the full centre position. Glenurquhart were also boosted by Lewis MacLennan’s return last weekend and he put his side ahead on 24 minutes. Eddie Tembo added a second 5 minutes later and Neale Reid made it 3-0 on 32 minutes. John Barr also got on the score sheet 3 minutes from the break but there was time for Aiden MacIntyre to pull a goal back and leave the Glen leading 4-1 at the break. Calum Fraser made it 5-1 on 67 minutes and although Iain MacMillan scored 5 minutes from the end, Glenurquhart ran out 5-2 winners. Oban Camanachd had Gary Lord sent off by referee John MacPhee at the death. Balliemore Cup winners Kinlochshiel remain top of Marine Harvest North Division 1 following their 4-3 win over Caberfeidh at Kirkton. Shiel were without buckshee back John Don MacKenzie who started a 2 match ban. However a Neil Fraser goal and a Finlay MacRae hat-trick cancelled goals from Iain MacColl, Kirk Taylor and Ally MacLennan to keep the west coast side’s good run going. Ben Delaney scored twice – once from the penalty spot – as Lochaber were 4-0 winners in the 12 noon throw up against Inverness at Spean. The win takes Lochaber into third place in the table. They trail leaders Kinlochshiel by 2 points but have 2 games in hand. Skye Camanachd welcomed second place Beauly to Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. The Islanders had only won one of their last six matches and knew that another defeat would see their title chances evaporate with only half the season played. However a goal at the end of each half from Gilleasbuig MacDonald and Martin Bruce got them back on the winning way. Kilmallie lead 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Michael Rodgers on 33 minutes and Martin Stewart 5 minutes before the break. However strikes from Gregor Cushnie 3 minutes into the second half, Mark Sproule on 65 minutes, Alan MacKenzie on 70 minutes and Crisdean Finlayson 4 minutes later put Lochcarron 4-2 up before Martin Stewart netted a last minute penalty for Kilmallie. Lochcarron move into second place, a point behind leaders Kinlochshiel with both sides having played 10 games. It’s a remarkable turnaround for the side who finished bottom of the table last season. Glenorchy clinched the Marine Harvest South Division 1 title and an immediate return to shinty’s top flight with a 5-0 home triumph over second place Oban Celtic. Glenorchy won 2-0 when the sides met in April but that only tells part of the story. Glenorchy had James Livingston to thank as his double gave them victory in a fiery encounter in Oban. The win was over-shadowed by 4 second half sendings off. Oban Celtic’s John Hill was first for an early bath after 51 minutes. This was followed by an incident in the 61 minute which resulted in referee Robert Baxter Jnr sending off Celtic’s Angus John MacNeil and Glenorchy pair John Sartain and Grant MacPherson. This was a tamer affair though and a Kieran MacKay double on 7 and 32 minutes gave the home side a 2-0 lead at the break. Alex MacPherson continued his good scoring run with goals on 52 and 72 minutes and Grant MacPherson got the other 3 minutes from the end. Glenorchy have won all 10 of their league fixtures so far. They have 2 more matches left and will be determined to maintain their 100% record for the rest of the season. The Inveraray second string secured their first league win of the season when they beat neighbours Kilmory 4-2. However they were aided by the inclusion of first team player Russell MacKinlay who scored a hat-trick. John MacKenzie got the other whilst Duncan MacBrayne and Andrew Cunningham scored for Kilmory. Youngster Craig MacDougall scored a goal in each half as Lochside Rovers beat Taynuilt 2-0. MacDougall hit the opener 2 minutes from the break and his second came on 77 minutes. Willie Neilson was sent off for Taynuilt. There was to be a midweek match in Marine Harvest North Division 2 as Newtonmore and Lovat were fixtured to meet at the Eilan but the game was postponed because of the heavy rain. Fifth place Kingussie and fourth place Fort William met in a Friday night match at the Dell. The Fort have been missing the presence of the injured Daniel Stewart up front. A Steven Dormer double and a Brian Mabon effort gave the Kings a 3-1 win with James Cameron replying for the visitors. There was a Saturday local derby at Braeview Park as Beauly and Lovat clashed and the home side were just 5 minutes away from collecting a valuable point. Rory Cruden put Lovat ahead on 33 minutes but Simon Holmes leveled on 64 minutes. An 85 minute Duncan Davidson goal and a last minute Jimmy MacKenzie shot gave Lovat both points with a 3-1 win. Skye Camanachd headed for Canal Parks to play Kilmallie having taken 8 points from the previous 10. However Kilmallie took both points from this one with a 2-1 win. With table toppers Glengarry not in action, second place Glenurquhart took the chance to close the gap at the top to just 2 points with a 3-1 win. First half goals from Kelvin MacKenzie on 19 minutes and Daniel MacIntosh on 28 minutes put the Glen 2-0 up at the break. Ewan Brady added a third on 65 minutes and David Wilde pulled a goal back for ‘More 5 minutes later. Glasgow Mid Argyll were brought back down to earth after reaching the Bullough Cup Final last weekend when they lost 4-2 to Tayforth in Perth in Marine Harvest South Division 2. Allan Brunton and Ewan Forsyth scored for Mid Argyll whilst Norman Campbell, Stuart Ferrier, Paul McConville and Neil Shearer replied for Tayforth. Aberdour took the chance to leap-frog third place Strachur when they had a 4-0 win over Bute in Rothesay. Doug Newsom put them ahead after 9 minutes and Kevin McKell made it 2-0 up at the break. Goals from Angus Thorburn on 65 minutes and Katie Smith 10 minutes later clinched the win. The match of the day in Marine Harvest North Division 3 was at Spean Bridge where second place Lochaber played leaders Aberdeen University. The Students held a 6 point lead over their rivals ahead of this meeting but Lochaber had 3 games in hand. Lochaber took the points with a 5-2 win. Keith Neville scored twice in the first and third minute whilst Alan Knox grabbed a hat-trick on 25, 50 and 75 minutes. Kenny MacLeod scored for Aberdeen on 18 minutes whilst Steven MacKenzie got the other on 63 minutes The Students still have a 4 point lead although Lochaber have 3 games in hand. Boleskine and Lochbroom meet at Farr. The visitors have only lost to Aberdeen University (twice) and Caberfeidh this season and they were 2-1 winners when the sides met in May. However this time they had to share the points after a 3-3 draw. Aaron Matheson scored twice for the visitors with Cameron MacRae getting the other. Darren MacLeod, James Ralph and Raymond Robertson got the Boleskine goals. Third place Caberfeidh were awarded the points when Lochcarron were unable to raise a team for their match at Castle Leod. |
