Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final - Inveraray 3 Kyles Athletic 2. | |
30 June 2010 Inveraray retained the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup with a 3-2 win over Kyles Athletic at Anniesland on Saturday 26 June 2010. Inveraray were without Douglas Dando and David MacPherson although David Robertson took his place at full centre but was to last just over the hour. Kyles were at full strength. Kyles came flying out of the blocks right from the throw up and they took the lead after just 4 minutes when Colin MacColl crashed a first time volley from the right past Graeme MacPherson. MacColl looked to have a clear run at goal on 10 minutes but he was brought down by Scott Robertson, an incident which caught the eye of referee David Mitchell. Kyles were enjoying the best of the opening 20 minutes and the tussles between Scott Robertson and Colin MacColl continued until the 29 minute when, as they battled for possession, Robertson held MacColl’s stick and the Kyles man’s swing caught the Inveraray defender across the leg as he seemed to try and block with his foot. Referee Mitchell booked MacColl for his swing and he booked Robertson for persistent fouling. Kyles made it 2-0 on 34 minutes when the Inveraray defence failed to clear their lines and Thomas Whyte blasted the ball into the lead. Kyles will probably regret not being able to hold onto their 2 goal cushion for longer than a couple of minutes as Garry MacPherson latched onto a shy from the left to pull a goal back. Kyle’s Andrew King and Garry MacPherson battled for possession 25 yards from goal on 40 minutes. King suffered a nasty gash to his leg and was then adjudged to have fouled MacPherson. King received treatment for his injury and when play resumed, MacPherson expertly rifled the free-hit low to Kenny MacDonald’s right to square the match at the break. The winning goal came just a minute into the second half. Russell MacKinlay was tripped inside the extended penalty area and MacPherson stepped up to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot. Kyles battled hard for the remainder of the game but they found Graeme MacPherson in no mood to miss out the opportunity to secure a record 12th Glasgow Celtic Society Cup winning medal, a record he now shares with his hat-trick hero brother Garry MacPherson. Both sides did their best to serve up an entertaining match on a very dry pitch which was void of grass in many places. Inveraray’s Garry MacPherson was deservedly named man of the match. |
