Kyles Athletic 2 Skye Camanachd 0. | |
21 June 2010 Skye Camanachd are out of the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup after they lost 2-0 to Kyles Athletic in their quarter final tie at Tighnabruaich on Saturday 19 June 2010. Skye Camanachd second team manager Davie MacVicar was forced to make 7 changes from the squad that beat Beauly a fortnight earlier. Injury and illness ruled out defenders Iain Grant and Shaun Hedley, midfielder Daniel Morrison and forward Jordan Murchison. Calum Gibb and Willie MacRae were unavailable because of work commitments and Allan MacKinnon was recalled to first team duty. Captain David Grant returned to the squad after breaking his thumb against Col Glen 4 weeks earlier in the previous round. Scott Martin also returned after suffering an ankle knock in the same game. Ally MacLeod was back in the side after illness. There was also a first appearance in 2 years for Malcolm Moir. U17 player Scott MacLeod came into the defence and fellow youth player Magnus Burd started on the bench. The team travelled with only 2 substitutes, both of whom were carrying injuries. Matters got worse when Magus Burd aggravated a knee injury in the warm up and was unable to take part. On a hot and sunny day the 2 teams served up what Kyles stalwart Dan MacRae described as a poor game. Neither team managed to create any real openings during the early exchanges although Skye perhaps had the upper hand in terms of possession. Skye’s first shot on goal came following a Stewart Grant hit-in that was only cleared as far as Ally MacLeod whose 15 yard drive was comfortably palmed away for a corner by Kyles keeper Chris Moss. Skye’s next opportunity followed a surging run by Stewart Grant that ended with a flashing drive across the face of the goal. Up at the other end Skye custodian Michael Nicolson had to look lively to turn a Gordon Whyte shot round the post. Kyles took the lead on 23 minutes when a long ball up field from wing centre Coley looked to be going out of play. With the Skye defence hesitating, Peter Mobeck played in Euan MacDonald who fired a low grounder into the Skye net from 20 yards. As Kyles tried to take a grip of the game, Skye had a narrow escape when both Gordon Whyte and Coley sent fierce shots just wide of the target. The game continued to flow from end to end without creating any real openings and half time arrived with Kyles still holding their one goal advantage. The start of the second period saw a renewed effort from Skye with Darryl MacIntosh prominent at full centre. Within minutes of the restart Skye came close to opening their account but Ally MacLeod was again denied by Moss in the Kyles goal. Player / manager MacVicar, who was carrying an injury, was the only available Skye substitute. In an attempt to salvage a draw MacVicar came on in place of Ally MacLeod with 25 minutes remaining. However, with just under 10 minutes left, Kyles sealed their win. Rupert Williamson played a long ball into the danger area and hesitancy by Michael Nicolson in the Skye goal allowed substitute Angus Finlayson to nip in and score. Skye continued to press until the final whistle and Ally MacDonald saw his shot come off the top of the Kyles crossbar after Angie MacDonald had done the spadework. This was a disappointing result for a depleted Skye team where there were few performances of note Skye Camanachd from, Michael Nicolson, David Grant, (captain), Andrew Banks, Scott MacLeod, Martin Bruce Stewart Grant, Darryl MacIntosh, Scott Martin, Ally MacDonald, Ally MacLeod, (Davie MacVicar), Malcolm Moir, Angie MacDonald, sub Magnus Burd, not used Match Referee – David Mitchell |
