Season 1986 / 87 - End of Season Reflections
The end of the 1986 / 87 season allowed Skye Camanachd to reflect on the progress made by their first and second teams.
Calum Murchison’s first team’s third place finish was an improvement on the previous season’s fourth placing. The team also reached the MacTavish Cup semi finals before going down to eventual winners Newtonmore. The Macaulay Cup and Camanachd Cup campaigns never made it past the second round, losing out to Fort William and Kingussie respectively. Murchison was to remain in charge of the first team for the 1987 / 88 season.
Archie MacDonald’s second team also finished in third place in their league. This too was one place higher than the previous season. The side also reached the semi final stage of both the Sutherland Cup and Strathdearn Cup. They were rather unlucky to lose both semi finals and could consider the season to be a success. Donnie Martin took over the Skye Camanachd second team for season 1987 / 88 after Archie MacDonald stood down. However MacDonald was persuaded to stay on as assistant manager.
Skye Camanachd planned to play the Thomas Ferguson Memorial Cup at the start of the 1987 / 88 season against a Kinlochshiel / Lochcarron select.
The Islanders also planned to send a sixes team to the annual Aberdeen Shinty Festival.
They also looked into the possibility of sending a full team to London to play London Camanachd amongst others in a tournament in July 1987, however in the end this trip proved to be cost prohibitive.
And that was the 1986 / 87 shinty season.
