07 January 2010 Season 1986 / 87 – The Cups The Sutherland Cup Saturday 7 February 1987 – Sutherland Cup Second Round – Many expected Skye Camanachd to stroll through this Sutherland Cup second round tie against a Skye went a long way to confirming this viewpoint when they raced into a 2 goal first half lead. The opening exchanges were even before the Skye centre line took a grip of the match. Ally “Mhor” Morrison (Kyleakin) was first to threaten when he rifled a shot on target which Skye Camanachd eventually took the lead midway through the first half and it was full forward Ally “Mhor” Morrison (Portree) who found a way past MacDonald following a goalmouth scramble. Skye pressed home their advantage a minute before the break and it was a goal from the top drawer. Ally MacInnes flighted a corner from the left and Ally “Mhor” Morrison (Portree) took the ball first time in the air to crash a shot past the helpless MacDonald and bag his and his team’s second goal of the game. However if Skye were destined to runaway with this tie then no one had told Fort William the script and the home side fought back to level the game set up a thrilling finish. The Fort pushed defender Martin Keenan into their attack from the start of the second half and this switch immediately paid dividends when he sent a low, crisp drive into the net. Worse was to follow for Skye a minute later when David MacRae scored an almost identical goal to level the tie. Skye were shell-shocked and Skye slowly fought there way back into the tie and only some excellent goalkeeping from Lachie MacDonald kept the scores level. The Fort held out until 8 minutes from the end when John MacRae made space to net what proved to be the winning goal. Skye’s reward for this 3-2 triumph was a third round tie against Kincraig. |
