Memory Lane – Season 1986 / 87 – Part 30. | |
21 December 2009 Saturday 25 April 1987 - North Division 1 – Lovat 7 Skye Camanachd 1 After such a rousing performance against Newtonmore the previous week, Skye Camanachd ended the season on a disappointing note when they suffered a 7-1 drubbing from Lovat at Balgate. The defeat would have been particularly hard to swallow for Skye player / manager Calum Murchison as he watched his brother Donald Neil Murchison score 5 times for the home side. It was a weakened Skye defence which made the trip and Lovat punished them in devastating fashion. Skye were missing 6 players in total and this game certainly had a real end of season feel about it for the Islanders. Stewart MacRae gave Lovat an early lead but Ally “Mhor” Morrison (Kyleakin) equalised just moments later for the Sgiathanaichs. Donald Neil Murchison opened his account to make it 2-1 and Ally “Mhor” Morrison (Kyleakin) thought he had equalised again for Skye but his effort was ruled out for offside. It was an explosive start to the game as there were only 10 minutes gone at this stage. Skye suffered a blow a minute later when Ally “Mhor” Morrison (Kyleakin), who had made an excellent start to the game, had to go off injured. Skye actually only had 12 recognised players available for the game. They persuaded James “Tatties” MacDonald, who hadn’t played shinty since his school days and was better known for his prowess on the Skye football scene, to be their sub for the day and he came on in place of the injured Morrison. Some heroic defending looked to have taken Skye to the break just one goal in arrears but Donald Neil Murchison struck again just before the whistle to give the home side a 3-1 lead at the interval. The second half belonged to Lovat and Donald Neil Murchison racked up a quick-fire to take his personal tally to an impressive 5 goals and give Lovat an unassailable 6-1 lead. Leslie Nairn made it 7-1 near the end to complete an afternoon of misery for Skye. |
