Memory Lane – Season 1986 / 87 – Part 27. | |
15 December 2009 Saturday 11 April 1987 - North Division 1 – Kinlochshiel 1 Skye Camanachd 8 Skye did the double over their west coast rivals with a convincing win at Kirkton. The home side started well and forced 2 corners in the opening minutes. Skye keeper Ian “Dowel” MacLeod was called into action and he had to look lively to keep a looping Keith Loades shot from giving Shiel the lead. Skye finally started to assert themselves and they took the lead after 19 minutes with a great goal. The move was started by Duncan MacDougall 15 yards from goal and he scooped the ball to Willie Cowie at the left post. Cowie brought the ball down and skilfully lobbed the ball to Willie MacKinnon who smashed a shot past Leslie Gordon, giving the keeper no chance. Kinlochshiel levelled just 3 minutes later. Colin Fraser capitalised on a poor clearance from Calum Murchison and the crashed the ball past MacLeod to make it 1-1. However the lead barely lasted 60 seconds as Willie Cowie ran wide and fired the ball past Gordon from the tightest of angles. Just to prove it wasn’t a fluke, Cowie made it 3-1 from almost exactly the same spot on the half hour mark and Skye took this lead into the half time break. Skye struck first 5 minutes into the second period and it was another well constructed goal involving Cowie, MacKinnon and MacDougall again. Willie Cowie dinked the ball to Willie MacKinnon who was hovering around the D. MacKinnon, with his back to goal, flicked the ball to Duncan MacDougall who slotted the ball past Gordon into the corner of the net to make it 4-1. The Skye forwards were rampant for the remainder of the game. A Duncan MacDougall shot took the merest deflection to make it 5-1. MacDougall was unlucky not to complete his hat-trick when he saw a shot come back off the post but Calum Murchison, who had pushed into the forward line, knocked the rebound into the back of the net. Willie MacKinnon scored his second and Skye’s seventh on 75 minutes and John “Slippy” Finlayson completed the scoring when he made it 8-1 with jut 3 minutes remaining. This result left Kinlochshiel in real relegation trouble as Beauly beat Glenurquhart the same day. Shiel now had to win their last match at It was Newtonmore at home next for Skye Camanachd. |
