The Shinty Preview. | |
05 October 2009 There is another busy shinty programme on Saturday 10 October 2009. Scottish Hydro Premier Division leaders Newtonmore travel to Kingussie await the visit of Inveraray knowing that they must keep winning their league matches if they are to retain the championship. The Kings will have Andrew Borthwick and John Hutchison back from suspension and Ronald Ross should have recovered from a knee knock. Danger-man Garry MacPherson will be back for Inveraray who sit in the relegation zone. Glenurquhart make the trip to Tighnabruaich to play Kyles Athletic. This is the Glen’s penultimate league match and they are in fourth place with a 1 point advantage over their rivals. However fifth place Kyles do have a game in hand so this match could determine which of the sides finishes highest in the table. The match of the day in Marine Harvest North Division 1 will be at Balgate where Lovat host Kinlochshiel. Lovat had a 3-1 win when the sides met at Kirkton in July and they will be keen to get over the disappointment of last week’s defeat to Skye Camanachd in Portree. However Shiel are on a good run of late having lost only 1 of their last 5 matches. Kilmallie will want to keep up the pressure at the top of the table and they play their final league match against Strathglass at Canal Parks. Kilmallie romped to a 6-0 win when the sides met at Cannich last month but Garry Reid’s side have won their last 2 league outings. The bottom 2 clubs Lochcarron and Most interest in Marine Harvest South Division 1 will be focused on Oban where Lochside Rovers can clinch the title by taking a point against derby rivals Oban Celtic. There is also some added spice, if it were needed, as the sides will also compete for the 2009 Royal National Mod Cup. There will be another cracking match in this division when third place Kilmory host second place Glasgow Mid Argyll. The sides are separated by 5 points in favour of Mid Argyll but Kilmory have 2 games in hand so this is clearly a crucial clash. Kilmory started their season with 3 defeats but have since gone on a great run of 6 consecutive league wins. As Lochside Rovers are Oban Camanachd’s second team, they cannot be promoted to the Scottish Hydro Premier League. Therefore there could be a place in the top division for the leagues runners up who will come from either Kilmory or Glasgow Mid Argyll so there is plenty at stake. Tayforth will hope to put team raising difficulties behind them and travel to Tighnabruaich to play Inveraray. Glenurquhart have the chance to clinch the Marine Harvest North Division 2 championship when they travel to Castle Leod to play bottom side Caberfeidh. The Glen missed out last week when they went down to Newtonmore at Drumnadrochit and they will be keen to avid any slip up this time. Glengarry make the short journey west to play Kinlochshiel at Kirkton. Shiel will be out for revenge after a 7-1 thumping at Invergarry in August. In Marine Harvest South Division 2, Kyles Athletic take on Ballachulish at Tighnabruaich. The sides have yet to meet in the league this season. This match has a 12 noon throw up. Col Glen host Third place Glenorchy play second bottom Strachur at Dalmally. The only match to take place in Marine Harvest North Division 3 sees Boleskine and Strathglass meet at Farr. Both sides are mid table. Strathglass have a 1 point advantage in the league but Boleskine have a game in hand. Boleskine won 2-1 when the sides met at Cannich in April. |
