Skye Camanachd 4 Lochcarron 1. | |
13 September 2009 Skye Camanachd came out on top in their penultimate Marine Harvest North Division 1 match against Lochcarron at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 12 September 2009. Skye manager Aonghas MacDonald was without the services of Jamie MacDonald and Shockie MacLennan but Allan MacLeod returned to the side. Lochcarron were without keeper Michael MacMillan and the suspended Angus MacKay. The home side made a good start and pressured the Lochcarron goal from the off. After 5 minutes, Ian Nicolson won possession in defence and played in Kenny Campbell on the right. Skye took the lead just a minute later and it came from another move on the Skye right. Wing forward Alan Palmer crossed into the danger area to find Ally MacLennan. MacLennan took the ball first time around 25 yards from goal, flicked the ball a few inches in the air before crashing a first time volley into the roof of the net for one of the goals of the season. Lochcarron levelled on 16 minutes when the Skye defence failed to clear a free hit from the left and Gregor Cushnie tucked the ball low into the bottom right hand corner of Jamie Gannon’s net. Skye regained the lead on 22 minutes and it was Ally MacLennan who did the damage as he drifted across goal before guiding the ball into the top left corner of the net. Somhairle MacDonald scored from a corner 5 minutes before the break but the goal was ruled out for offside. Lochcarron’s Gregor Cushnie was booked a minute before the break for flicking his foot out in a challenge with Ian Nicolson and Gilleasbuig MacDonald. Skye started the second half in much the same fashion as they opened the game. Dougie Rankin sent a lofted shot just over the bar after 50 minutes and Somhairle MacDonald shot into the side net moments later. Rankin shot over the bar a couple of minutes later but Skye did make it 3-1 on 56 minutes. Kerr Gibb played a great cross from the right and Alan Palmer ran in to tuck the ball under Lochcarron keeper Craig Callaghan into the net. Just 3 minutes later it was 4-1. Alan Palmer turned provider again and his ball across goal was touched home from a couple of yards by Somhairle MacDonald. Skye introduced Danny Morrison for Dougie Rankin and Allan MacKinnon for Alan Palmer. Skye’s Gilleasbuig MacDonald was booked after 70 minutes following an altercation with David MacCuish in which the Lochcarron player escaped with a finger-wagging from referee Ronnie Campbell. Donnie Campbell replaced Somhairle MacDonald in the closing minutes and although the home side tired in the final quarter, they held out for a 4-1 win. The win guarantees Skye at least third place in the league which was the Islanders original target at the start of the season. A final league match against Lovat in Portree on Saturday 3 October 2009 could prove crucial in determining the final league placings, as will the outcome of Lovat and Kilmallie’s final games.
