10 September 2009 Skye Camanachd’s Cuairt gu The big day of the Pleasanton Highland Games organized by the Caledonian Society of San Francisco is upon us. We get the shuttle bus to the pitch which is normally part of a golf driving range. We are lucky that the weather is ‘good’ i.e. it is much colder than normal at only 80 degrees - still pretty hot and Donnie Martin quickly turns a nice shade of red. In fact The games of shinty are fun and everyone gets a go, although the crowd is not quite as expected due to the positioning of the field. Bruce scores a cracker of a goal from all of 50 yards that nearly bursts the net. And AB scores on the pitch for a change. Both teams head back to Izzy’s and we are given a private dining room. We start off with a toast by everyone round the table. Michael makes an emotional toast to everlasting friendship between the two clubs. Donnie replies with a toast to laryngitis for reasons known only to him. Steven Morrison makes an excellent toast to ‘the most enthusiastic club in all of shinty’. |
