The Shinty Round Up - UPDATED. | |
05 September 2009 The shinty programme was affected by the weather on Saturday 5 September 2009. However Scottish Hydro Premier Division leaders Newtonmore didn’t let the weather distract them as they extended their lead following a good 2-0 win over second bottom The match of the day between Lochaber’s match at Dalmally against already relegated Glenorchy did not go ahead as the pitch was deemed unplayable. Glenurquhart’s trip to Tigh na Bruaich to play Inveraray suffered a similar fate. The Marine Harvest North Division 1 results might have gone in leaders Skye Camanachd’s favour last weekend but the same could not be said of this weekend’s results. Lovat and Caberfeidh met at Balgate and following this extremely close encounter, the sides were only separated by a penalty hit. Caberfeidh had Archie Ritchie back in goal after he missed last weekend’s defeat against Kinlochshiel. DJ Mellis hit the bar for Caberfeidh but after 15 minutes, referee Charles Young adjudged that Cabers keeper Ritchie had kicked the ball in penalty area and awarded a penalty. Lovat’s 16 year old forward Greg Matheson showed maturity beyond his years when he stepped forward to hit the penalty low and hard to the keeper’s right. Both Cabers’ keeper Archie Ritchie and Stuart MacDonald in the Lovat goal made some great saves to keep the score down and Lovat held on to win two precious points. The fourth place Balgate side are now 2 points behind leaders Skye Camanachd with 3 games in hand. Strathglass hosted Kilmallie at Cannich, hoping to put their title chances back on track after only picking up 1 league point out of their last 8. However Garry Reid’s side were given a devastating lesson in finishing by a Kilmallie side who reminded everyone that they are very much in amongst the sides looking for promotion to the top flight. Trevor Jackson and Liam MacDonald bagged doubles with John Stewart and Michael Rodger also found the net to seal a comprehensive 6-0 win. Kilmallie move into second place in the table. They are level on points with Caberfeidh and a point behind leaders Skye Camanachd with a game in hand. Kinlochshiel and Beauly will have to meet again as Kirkton was ruled unplayable. Lochcarron’s “must win” match against The Marine Harvest South Division 1 programme was totally wiped out meaning that Lochside Rovers will have to wait for the chance to clinch the title as their match against Oban Celtic did not go ahead. Kilmory’s match against Tayforth and Glasgow Mid Argyll’s game against Inveraray were also postponed. The Marine Harvest North Division 2 bottom club Kinlochshiel travelled to Balgate to play Lovat. Jimmy MacKenzie gave the home side a 7 minute lead and Steven Cameron made it 2-0 just 5 minutes later. Jimmy MacKenzie notched his second on 14 minutes and Cameron grabbed his second after 35 minutes to give Lovat a 4-0 interval lead. The second half was a more even affair and in the space of a minute, MacKenzie completed his hat-trick whilst Alan MacDiarmid pulled a goal back for Shiel. James MacPherson made the final score 6-1 to Lovat with a goal 15 minutes from the end. Glenurquhart’s match against Caberfeidh at Castle Leod was postponed as was nearest challengers Newtonmore and Skye Camanachd also had their game called off as the Eilan couldn’t take 2 games. The Marine Harvest South Division 2 programme were also wiped out. This included Strachur’s tip to Marine Harvest North Division 3 leaders Lochbroom were to play Lochcarron in Ullapool. However the Battery Park side were unable to raise a team so the points go to Lochbroom who have now competed all their matches to finish the season on 18 points. Beauly travelled to the Highland Capital to play Kincraig’s team raising difficulties continued and they have now been unable to fulfill 6 league fixtures this season as they could not field a side at home to Ardnamurchan. Kincraig’s previous unfulfilled games had all been away from home. Boleskine’s trip to play |
