Caberfeidh U17 0 Skye Camanachd U17 7 - UPDATED. | |
13 August 2009 The Skye Camanachd U17 team travelled to Castle Leod to play Caberfeidh U17 in the London Shield League on Thursday 13 August 2009. Skye Camanachd U17 coach Davie MacVicar had to made a couple of late changes to his squad as Ally MacLeod and Shaun Hedley missed out through work commitments. Calum Gibb and Chris MacLennan were called up as replacements. Skye attacked from the outset and it was no surprise when John Gillies got the young Islanders off to a great start with a goal after only 3 minutes. A free hit from captain Neil MacVicar was only partially cleared by the Cabers defence and Gillies finished well from the end of the D. On 7 minutes Skye’s Stewart Grant’s long range effort was well saved by Caberfeidh’s 14 year old keeper Jamie Matheson. A second goal arrived a minute later and this time Gillies turned provider and crossed for Jordan Murchison to apply a cool finish from the edge of the D. Murchison scored his second moments later from a similar position after Danny Morrison created the opportunity by beating two defenders with some neat stick work. Skye were in almost total control and Murchison was denied his hat-trick on 17 minutes although keeper Matheson knew little about his save. A Daniel Morrison corner was taken first time by Murchison on his weaker back hand and his thunderous drive was turned round the post off keeper Matheson’s back. After a brief foray into the Skye half by Cabers, Skye resumed the offensive and this time Danny Morrison was the scorer when he picked up a Stewart Grant pass, turned his marker and finished crisply from the edge of the D. Keeper Matheson was in action moments later to deny Danny Morrison a second and Paul MacKinnon was next in on the action when a surging run carried him past 3 defenders only to see his flashing drive finish wide of the post. Skye went 5-0 up moments from half time with the goal of the game as clever play from Paul MacKinnon at buckshee forward teed up Neil MacVicar who sent a thunderous swerving drive into the roof of the net from 35 yards. The was little respite for Cabers in the second half as MacVicar saw another long range drive saved by Matheson. Moments later Daniel Morrison, who put in a great performance at wing centre, was only denied by another smart save from the Cabers keeper. Skye made it 6-0 on 56 minutes through another of their standout performers, John Gillies. The young wing forward carried the ball past 2 defenders and despite being on the end of a rash challenge which meant he lost his footing, he still had the awareness to flick the ball into the empty net. Gillies then turned provider when he crossed for Danny Morrison to score Skye’s seventh and his own second goal in 71 minutes. Skye keeper Scott MacLeod remained a virtual spectator throughout although well protected by his defence. The introduction of substitutes Ali Digg MacDonald, Chris MacLennan and Calum Gibb didn’t disrupt the onslaught with all 3 players coming close to adding to the score. This was a commanding performance from a Skye team who had no failures against a younger Cabers side. The victory gives them 3 wins out of 3 in the London Shield League following victories over Lovat and Kingussie. Skye Coach Davie MacVicar reserved special mention for man of the match John Gillies, Daniel Morrison and defender Neil John Campbell for his prodigious clearances from defence, particularly first half.
