Skye Camanachd 3 Caberfeidh 0. | |
02 August 2009 Skye Camanachd gained a valuable 2 points with a 3-0 win over Caberfeidh in Marine Harvest North Division 2 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 1 August 2009. Skye Camanachd second team manager Davie MacVicar is on holiday so Alasdair Bruce, Willie Cowie and Willie MacRae took the side. With both teams stripped and ready to play, there was a danger that the game would not go ahead when match referee John Sloggie did not appear. However with the agreement of both sides, Donnie Martin stepped in to save the day and delivered an impressive refereeing performance throughout the game.
There were 6 changes to Skye the side which lost to Kingussie a fortnight ago. Defender Iain Urquhart was unavailable whilst Iain Nicolson, Shockie MacLennan, Danny Morrison and Donnie Campbell returned to first team duty. Iain Grant was on holiday.
Andrew Banks returned to the side at buckshee back and did an excellent job marking Cabers danger man Stewart Krzyzanowski. Martin Bruce was also back and played at wing back although he was still suffering from a recent rib injury. Jamie Nicolson switched to wing centre and he also had an effective afternoon. The forward line benefited from the return of experienced duo of Peter Gordon and Angie MacDonald. Caberfeidh played with the wind if the first half and they pressed the Skye goal from the throw up. However the Skye defence, well marshaled by full back David Grant, held firm and Neil John Campbell was particularly impressive during this period making some telling challenges and vital clearances. When the opening goal arrived though, it came at the other end of the field after 14 minutes. Scott Martin won the ball in midfield and played in Kieran Roberts on the left. Roberts sent a deep cross into the penalty area where Iain Morrison pounced to crash an unstoppable shot past Caber’s keeper Martin MacLean into the roof of the net. Skye were putting together some good passing moves and buckshee forward Peter Gordon, who gave his marker Andrew MacMaster a torrid time in the first half, was integral to all their good play. Skye almost doubled their lead midway through the half when Gordon set up Roberts but he fired wide. Skye were now dominating the centre line with Neil MacVicar having a good first half and they extended their advantage in 33 minutes when Jamie Nicolson played in Angie MacDonald and the full forward found space with his back to goal and turned to crack the ball into the net. Skye went further ahead 6 minutes before the break when some keepy-upy from Angie MacDonald attracted the attentions of 3 Cabers defenders which allowed Kieran Roberts to find space on the left. MacDonald flicked the ball to Roberts who maintained his recent scoring spree by tucking the ball past MacLean to give Skye a 3-0 interval lead. Caberfeidh knew that they had to score the next goal to get back in the match and they opened the second period strongly. Scott MacLeod in the Skye goal made a terrific double save with his legs and another stop above his head was breath-taking. Kieran Roberts went close to extending Skye’s lead on 2 occasions, with MacLean making a great block with his shoulder from one effort. Iain Morrison put the ball in the net with a great mid air flick from a Roberts cross but the goal was ruled out by referee Martin as Morrison was marginally offside. Skye seemed to tire during the last half hour of the game and Caberfeidh’s Alan Ross should have done better when he found space in front of goal but he knocked the ball over the bar. Krzyzanowski rattled the frame of the goal with one piledriver as the Skye goal suffered a period of pressure but some timely interventions from Martin Bruce helped clear the lines on several occasions. Skye’s David Grant made a great block above his head to stop a goal bound effort and the Skye goal remained intact for the side’s first clean sheet of the season. Skye introduced Robert Urquhart for the tiring Iain Morrison and Jordan Murchison replaced Angie MacDonald with Peter Gordon moving to full forward. Skye’s final substitution saw Daniel Morrison from Struan replace Jamie Nicolson to make his debut for the second team.
