21 July 2009 The Balliemore Cup Final took centre stage on Strathglass won the 2009 Balliemore Cup after a 5-1 win over Kinlochshiel in the Final at Rothesay, Strathglass started the second half with the breeze at their backs and they made their opponents pay within 30 seconds of the throw up. Shiel full back Paul MacRae missed a clearance as a ball into defence bobbled and veteran Robert Geddes nipped in to tuck the ball into the back of the net. Strathglass made it 3-1 just 10 minutes later when a cross ball into defence evaded Paul MacRae and Geddes lobbed his second into the net. Another 10 minutes passed and another Strath goal arrived. This time player / manager Garry Reid found space on the left and gleefully fired the ball into the net. Reid then turned provider as he played in 17 year old Marc MacLaughlan on the left and the youngster blasted a backhand effort into the roof of the net. Strathglass deserved their win on their second half performance and they will now look to continue their good form for the remainder of their league campaign. Inveraray joined Kingussie, Lochaber and Oban Camanachd in the MacPhee & Partners Macaulay Cup semi finals following their 2-0 win over Glenurquhart dealt a blow to Reigning champions Kingussie took full advantaged as a Ronald Ross hat-trick gave them a 3-0 win over in form Oban Camanachd at the Dell. Oban Camanachd were without the suspended Grant MacPherson and David MacInnes but they had no answer to Ross who opened the scoring after 20 minutes. Oban were still in the game until the 57 minute when the game’s top scorer notched his second. Ross completed his hat-trick on 65 minutes top move the Kings to within a point of leaders Newtonmore sit 2 points behind third placed Glenurquhart following their 9-1 demolition of Glenorchy at the Eilan. However ‘More have played 5 games less than the Glen and could draw level with Kingussie if they win their games in hand. Danny MacRae opened the scoring for the home side after only 8 minutes. Evan Menzies made it 2-0 just 3 minutes later but Glenorchy’s Kieran MacKay pulled a goal back after 16 minutes. Danny MacRae scored his second from the spot after 18 minutes and Menzies also scored his second on 35 minutes to give the blue and white hoops a 4-1 half time lead. ‘More scored 3 goals in a 5 minute spell at the start of the second half to wrap up the points. Glen MacKintosh made it 5-1 after 47 minutes and MacRae completed his hat-trick a couple of minutes later. Steven MacDonald made it 7-1 after 51 minutes and a further double from MacKintosh after 75 and 81 minutes completed his hat-trick and a 9-1 win. Kyles Athletic came fom behind to earn a share of the points against Lochaber at Tigh na Bruach. Sean Nicolson scored a great opener for the Spean Bridge side and Brian MacDonald added a second midway through the second half. However Grant Irvine pulled a goal back for the home side and Fraser MacDonald earned them a share of the points when he scored 3 minutes from the end. The second Friday night fixture of the weekend saw Marine Harvest North Division 1 league leaders Skye Camanachd beat bottom club Lochcarron 4-1 at Battery Park. This Skye victory was all the more impressive as the Islanders were without Second placed Kilmallie went down 3-2 to Caberfeidh in an exciting game at Canal Parks. Trevor Jackson gave the home side the lead after 26 minutes but Ally MacLennan levelled after 33 minutes. MacLennan then gave Cabers the lead right on half time and Kevin Bartlett scored a crucial third goal on 52 minutes. Peter MacIntyre pulled a goal back for the home side a minute later but Caberfeidh went on to take the points. Both clubs shared second place with Strathglass before Saturday’s games but Caberfeidh now move into second spot in their own right. Glasgow Mid Argyll narrowed the gap on second place Kilmory with a convincing 9-1 win over bottom club Tayforth at Yoker in Marine Harvest South Division 1. Tayforth had won both their previous league outings but they found the A Stuart Anderson hat-trick gave Inveraray the points in a 3-2 win over Ballachulish at Winterton. Craig Munro grabbed a brace for the visitors. In Marine Harvest North Division 2, second placed Second placed Kingussie came back from Portree with both points after a 5-2 win over Skye Camanachd. The Kings fell behind twice to first half strikes from Donnie Campbell and Danny Morrison. However a Thomas Borthwick double and a Rory Borthwick strike gave them an interval lead. Thomas Borthwick went on to score 2 more goals in the second half to continue his good scoring run and seal the points for the visitors. Lovat had to work hard for the points at Castle Leod against second bottom Caberfeidh. Lovat won the earlier meeting between the sides 8-0 but this was a much closer affair. The visitors had Jimmy MacKenzie and Steven Cameron to thank for a hat-trick each. Alan Ross, Stuart Krzyzanoski, Tom Evans and Garry MacLennan scored for Cabers. Newtonmore came from 3-1 down to run out narrow victors over Glengarry in a 7 goal thriller at the Eilan. Full forward David Wilde gave the home side a first minute lead but Martin Cameron drew the scores level on 9 minutes. Stuart Gregory gave the visitors the lead a couple of minutes later and Steven Cameron gave them a 3-1 half time advantage with a goal on the half hour mark. Chris Sellar pulled a goal back for ‘More 5 minutes into the second half but it took a late surge from the home side to win the points. Wilde scored his second on 84 minutes and John MacKenzie pushed forward to score the winner 2 minutes from the end. . In Marine Harvest South Division 2, Ally Shaw gave Aberdour a 12 minute lead at home to Glasgow Mid Argyll. Donald Colville made the score 1-1 after 39 minutes but a 61 minute goal from Craig Grant gave Aberdour the lead for the second time. Mid Argyll levelled again when Glenorchy were awarded the points when Ballachulish were unable to raise a team to travel to Dalmally. Second place Lochbroom narrowed the gap on leaders Beauly continued their good run with a huge 11-1 win at Kincraig. David MacLean gave the visitors a 5 minutes lead and Conner Ross made it Uist Camanachd won the Hebridean Celtic Festival Challenge Cup for the first time with a 3-0 win over Lewis Camanachd. There was a minutes silence at the start of the game in honour of Lewis player Craig Morrison who passed away the previous week following an accident. All the goals came in the first half. Craig Anderson gave Uist the lead on 25 minutes and 15 year old Ally Ferguson, who was making his senior debut, scored a second 5 minutes later. |
