Inveraray Win 2009 Celtic Society Cup - UPDATED. | |
27 June 2009 Inveraray won the 2009 Celtic Society Cup with a 3-2 victory over Oban Camanachd at Old Anniesland on Saturday 27 June 2009. Their thrilling win means that Inveraray have won shinty’s oldest competition for the last 4 years. The sides had previously met in this competition in 1995, 1996 and 1998 with Inveraray winning all the previous encounters – they have in fact won 8 of the last 10 finals prior to this year’s event. Oban Camanachd last appeared in the Celtic Society Cup Final in 2005 when they beat Scott MacMillan gave Oban Camanachd a first half lead but Inveraray’s Chris Crawford leveled in the second half. A Gary MacPherson double put Inveraray 3-1 up and looked to have put his side in control. Their dominance seemed to have been reinforced when Oban Camanachd defender Liam MacIntyre was sent off for a second bookable defence. However Oban Camanachd might have been down but they certainly were not out. Scott MacMillan scored his and Oban’s second but try as they might, Camanachd could not level and Inveraray went on to regain the famous trophy. Brothers Graeme and Gary MacPherson have now equaled Kerr “Barney” Crawford’s record of amassing 11 winners medals each. Graeme won his previous 10 winners medals as a goalkeeper but has now won his record equaling 11th medal as an outfield player.
