Portree Primary School 8 Rockfield Primary School 1. | |
03 June 2009 Portree’s run to the final saw them win all their matches with some ease as they saw off, Inverlochy, On Saturday their opponents were once again Rockfield who they had narrowly beaten 5-4 last year to lift the trophy. This year however Portree had a much more convincing 8-1 victory although Rockfield were their toughest opponents to date. On a sun soaked This however served to further inspire Portree and with Will Cowie dominant in the centre of the field and ably supported by Alex MacDonald and Stephen Murchison Portree continued to attack and Andrew Grant completed his hat-trick from close range before Willie Cowie pounced on a saved shot from an Angie Grant drive to make the half time score 4-1 to Portree. In between the last two goals a Connor Ross strike was disallowed for off-side. Portree started the second half strongly and the forward line lead by Angie and Andrew Grant were moving the ball around well and Johnathan Laing and Caitlin MacLean who had replaced Connor Ross caused the very busy Rockfield keeper to make a few good saves. The goal of the game however was not long in coming and a 40 yard strike from Will Cowie gave the keeper no chance after 40 minutes play. Portree continued to press and Angie Grant who has had a strong season for Portree scored a well deserved 6th from close in before another Cowie strike was again disallowed for off-side. James Pringle, Sean Stevenson and Thomas Deas were introduced to the play for the last 20 minutes and Pringle looked lively on a couple of occasions while Deas and Stevenson both slotted into defence and coped well with any Rockfield breakaways. In 55 minutes Andrew Grant scored his 4th of the day and Portree’s 7th and 3 minutes later James Pringle reacted quickly to score number 8. In the last minute Portree had a 3rd goal of the day disallowed when another Pringle effort was again ruled offside. While this was a comfortable win for Portree and is the culmination of 7 years hard work by school coaches and pupils, Rockfield on the day acquitted them selves well and their goalkeeper Ellie MacNiven in particular must have been in contention for the player of the match award. In the end however this went to Portree’s Andrew Grant whose strong running and clinical finishing earned him the man of the match trophy. This was a strong Portree performance based on the team’s hard work, clean hitting and good movement. Portree are still involved in a number of national events over the summer and given this strong defence of the Mackay Cup they may add a few more pieces of silverware to their trophy cabinet by the end of September 2009.
