Skye Camanachd 0 Caberfeidh 1. | |
31 May 2009 Skye Camanachd went down to a 1-0 defeat to Caberfeidh at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 30 May 2009. Skye were without Somhairle MacDonald who had not recovered from an elbow knock picked up against Cabers last week and his place in the forward line was taken by Steven Morrison. This was the only change made to to the previous week’s starting line up. Steven Morrison and Dougie Rankin combined to good effect twice in the opening minutes with one effort coming off Caber’s keeper David Mellis and the other going wide. Dougie Rankin saw a shot flash past the post as Skye looked to take advantage from playing with the breeze across the Pair nan Laoch pitch. After 30 minutes a cross from Kenny Campbell was met by Norman MacLeod but he lifted the ball just wide of the goal. Dougie Rankin shot just wide from a Gilleasbuig MacDonald free hit after 36 minutes and just moments later, Skye manager Angie Murchison was forced to replace Steven Morrison who had struggled on after suffering a toe injury in a challenge, early in the game. Alan Palmer took Morrison’s place in the forward line. It wasn’t all one way traffic though and Caber’s Ally MacLennan shot just wide a couple of minutes later. Skye’s Ally MacLennan sent a great ball in on goal after 38 minutes but Cabers cleared and just a minute before the break, a Rankin shot was scrambled off the goal line by Mellis. Caberfeidh were first to threaten in the second halt with a Kevin Bartlett shot which went wide of Jamie Gannon’s goal. Dougie Rankin was clear throw on goal after 57 minutes but he was blatantly tripped by Graham MacGregor. The Caberfeidh defender was fortunate that referee Donald MacRae didn’t get a clear view of which player committed the foul. Norman MacLeod shot wide from the resultant free hit from Kenny Campbell. MacGregor was booked later in the game for one indiscretion too many. AB Connor went over on his ankle after 62 minutes and was replaced by Shockie MacLennan. It later turned out that Connor had been playing with a broken thumb following a knock in the early part of the first half. Caberfeidh then had a 5 minute spell of pressure on the Skye goal. Kirk Taylor couldn’t find the target from a MacLennan cross and he forced a save from Jamie Gannon a minute later. Cabers had the ball in the net on 67 minutes but the strike was ruled offside. A good run from Alan Palmer on 70 minutes set up Kenny Campbell but Mellis made a great save above his head from It was looking as if it wasn’t going to be Skye’s day and things went from bad to worse after 84 minutes when Caberfeidh took the lead. A long ball from right midfield was well taken down by Ally MacLennan and he blasted an unstoppable shot into the roof of the Skye net. Determined play from Alan Palmer created a chance for Danny Morrison, who’d come on for the injured Norman MacLeod, and his shot went just past the post. With Skye pressing for an equaliser, they were vulnerable to the Cabers counter attack and in one such break-away; Kirk Taylor missed a great chance to double Cabers lead. It wasn’t to be for Skye though and they will look at this as 2 points dropped but the win lifts Caberfeidh into third in the league. However it such a competitive league, there will no doubt be more points dropped by the competing teams before the season is over. Jamie MacDonald and Iain Nicolson were Skye’s best performers whilst Brian MacDonald and Lee Nicol stood out for Caberfeidh.
