Portree Primary School secured their place in the North Final of the MacKay Cup with a convincing win over Tomnacross Primary School on Friday 22 May 2009 in Lochcarron.
Portree made a great start to the match, scoring after only a couple of minutes. This was without doubt the best goal of the game - a long diagonal ball from Will Cowie was played on first time by Conner Ross to Angie Grant who flicked the ball to cousin Andrew and he drove the ball in to the roof of the net from 15 yards.
Portree extended their lead with a couple of close range efforts, expertly converted by Angie Grant.
Tomnacross managed to stem the tide for a short period of time but with Will Cowie dominating the centre of the park, they struggled to threaten the Portree goal.
Two long distance strikes from Andrew Grant gave Portree a comfortable lead before the Tomnacross keeper had the misfortune to hit the ball of one of his defenders and the rebound ended up in the back of the net to give Portree a 6 goal interval lead.
Portree continued to enjoy the bulk of play in the second half and Tomnacross having only the occasional break up the park. Will Cowie mad it 7-0 from wide on the left wing and this was followed by another great strike from Andrew Grant that gave the keeper no chance. Will Cowie scored another from distance before Caitlin Maclean rounded off a good move to clinch the tenth and final goal.
Sean Stevenson and Jonathon Laing replaced Will Cowie and Andrew Grant before the end of the match and Kyle Pirie made way for Caitlin Maclean.
Portree started this match at great pace and Tomnacross never really recovered. Tomnacross did have some excellent performances and are obviously a young team with a very bright future.
Portree had a good all round team performance with Will Cowie, Andrew Grant and Angie Grant the star players from this young but very experienced team.
