Skye Camanachd 0 Glenurquhart 8. | |
23 May 2009 The Skye Camanachd second team went down to a heavy defeat against Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Glenurquhart at Pairc na Laoch, Portree on Saturday 23 May 2009. Skye Camanachd manager Davie MacVicar had to make a couple of changes to his defence after Martin Bruce withdrew with a throat infection and with Iain Urquhart unavailable. Bruce, an ever-present in the side this season, was replaced at buckshee back by captain Ross Graham who was back in the side instead of the Urquhart. Scott MacLeod continued in goal as did David Grant and Neil John Campbell in defence. Iain Morrison switched form the forward line into defence. Kieran Roberts moved to full centre and he was flanked by Scott Martin and Stewart Grant. Peter Gordon continued at buckshee forward with Iain Grant and Neil MacVicar on the wings. Angie MacDonald came back into the side at full forward. Danny Morrison, Allan MacKinnon and the returning Donnie Campbell made up a strong substitute’s bench. The match was just over 15 minutes late in starting but it was the visitors who were quickest out of the blocks and Scott MacLeod had to make a neat double save as Ben Hosie and Ewan Brady bore in on goal. However a couple of minutes later Paul MacKintosh, a first team player who is returning from injury, played in David Smart and he fired a low shot into the net. Angie MacDonald set up a chance for Iain Grant after 10 minutes but the youngster’s shot was just wide of target. A couple of minutes later, Ben Hosie cut in from the Glen left and gave MacLeod no chance to score the visitor’s second. Skye were still an attacking threat though and a delightful Peter Gordon pass set up Angie MacDonald but he shot wide. Glen went 3-0 up on the half hour mark when Bradley Dickson burst forward from midfield and his shot deceived MacLeod to find the net. Ben Hosie sent a shot under the bar after 38 minutes to extend Glen’s lead. Skye had a chance to pull a goal back a minute before the break when referee Graham Cameron judged that a Glen defender had kicked the ball and awarded Skye a penalty. Full back Davie Grant stepped forward to take it and although he is usually reliable from the spot, he topped his effort and Gary MacKintosh saved with his legs. Skye suffered a blow a minute after the interval when they lost captain Ross Graham with a knee injury. Scott Martin dropped back to buckshee back and Danny Morrison came off the bench. A couple of minutes later it got worse for Skye as David Smart took advantage of the rearranged defence to score his second goal after a solo run. Skye introduced Allan MacKinnon for Neil MacVicar but the pressure on the Skye goal continued and Scott MacLeod did well to deal with a dipping Hosie effort and Ewen Brady sent the rebound wide. However 13 year old Brady wasn’t to be denied and he got his goal a minute later when he found the net from the Glen right. Skye gave Donnie Campbell his fist game of the season after 62 minutes when he replaced Angie MacDonald and he did well in his 30 minute appearance. Glenurquhart completed Skye’s misery when both Ben Hosie and David Smart completed their hat-tricks to complete the scoring. It was certainly a bad day at the office for Skye and few players came away with pass marks. Glenurquhart proved that their strong start to the season is no fluke and they have a good blend of experience with the like of Iain MacDonald at full back in commanding form and youth in the from of Ben Hosie and Ewan Brady amongst others. Indeed they were without veteran Stuart Morrison and full forward Calum Fraser although he had an able replacement in Paul MacKintosh. Skye Camanachd from; Scott MacLeod, David Grant, Iain Morrison, Neil John Campbell, Ross Graham (captain), (Danny Morrison), Stewart Grant, Kieran Roberts, Scott Martin, Peter Gordon, Iain Grant, Neil MacVicar, (Allan MacKinnon), Angie MacDonald, (Donnie Campbell). Match referee - Graham Cameron.
