Skye Camanachd 1 Beauly 2 (after extra time). | |
26 April 2009 It was a late knockout for the Skye Camanachd second team in a cup competition for the second time this season as they lost out to Beauly at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 25 April 2009. Skye manager Davie MacVicar made changes to the side that lost at Glenurquhart the previous week. Andrew Banks was unavailable so keeper Ross Graham moved to wing back with young Scott MacLeod taking over between the sticks. Martin Bruce moved to buckshee back with Kieran Roberts in the other wing back position. MacVicar himself took the full centre position and Iain Morrison came into the forward line instead of the injured Willie MacRae. After the opening exchanges, it was Skye who settled and after 5 minutes, Allan MacKinnon and Danny Morrison liked up well to set up Iain Morrison but his shot was well saved by Beauly keeper Kyle MacDonald. This was not to be the last time that MacDonald stood between Skye and a goal. Skye took the lead after 15 minutes when Angie MacDonald did the hard work and set up Allan MacKinnon who blasted high into the net. Iain Morrison fired over just minutes later and it just seemed a matter of time before Skye increased their lead. However Beauly broke up the park after 23 minutes and a Stevie Tulmen run and shot levelled the match. On the half hour mark, Allan MacKinnon played in Angie MacDonald but keeper MacDonald made a brilliant flying save with his right hand to deny the forward. Just minutes later, MacDonald made a triple save from his namesake which included one stop with his hand whilst lying flat out in the goal mouth. Then good inter-play between Iain Morrison and MacDonald set up Allan MacKinnon but MacDonald saved again. Danny Morrison took a nasty accidental cut to the head just before half time but he returned after the interval with his head bandaged up. The one way traffic continued after the break and a ball from MacVicar into the danger area came off the post but the Skye forwards were unable to capitalise. Danny Morrison hit the post after 65 minutes and Iain Morrison fired wide 10 minutes later. Paul MacKinnon, a second half substitute for Angie MacDonald, linked well with Morrison but again the latter’s shot was saved by MacDonald. Just on the final whistle, a Danny Morrison shot just whistled inches past the post and so, just as in the Sutherland Cup; it was going to take extra time to separate the sides. The extra time period offered more of the same and just when it looked as if the tie was going to be settled by penalties, Robert Tuach collected the ball on the Beauly left and sent a shot from distance on the Skye goal. Scott MacLeod did well to save his goal bound effort but as the ball dropped into the goal mouth, Jordan Teel flicked it into the net for a tie winning strike. There was barely enough time for referee Deek Cameron to restart the game and so, after a match played in fine spirit, it was Beauly who go through to host Kincraig in the second round. As well as an outstanding performance from keeper Kyle MacDonald, Beauly were well served by full back Martin Maclean and buckshee back Rory Campbell who both stayed focused throughout the periods of Skye pressure. Stewart Grant was best for Skye and Iain MacPherson put in a good shift in midfield. Allan MacKinnon was always a threat up front.
