29 March 2009 Four of the six scheduled MacTavish Cup first Round matches survived the weather on Saturday 28 March 2009. The most entertaining match of the round was at Balgate where Lovat and Strathglass - the sides relegated form last season’s Marine Harvest Premier League - fought out an incredible 15 goal thriller. Robert Geddes got the visitors off to a great start with the opening goal after only 3 minutes. Martin Bell equalised for Lovat 3 minutes later and the home side went on top turn the screw with a double from Raymond Rennie after 17 and 25 minutes and two goals in a minute from 15 year old Greg Matheson on the half hour mark to give Lovat a 5-1 lead. Strathglass fought back with a Marc McLaughlin goal after 35 minutes and two strikes within a minute of the break from Robert Geddes and Lee Bain giving a 5-4 half time score in Lovat’s favour. Martin Bell went on to complete his hat-trick in 60 and 65 minutes to make the score 7-4 in Lovat’s favour. However Marc McLaughlin also went on to complete his hat-trick with goals in 75 and 77 minutes to reduce the deficit to a single goal again. Greg Matheson completed the third hat-trick of the game after 80 minutes with Lovat’s crucial eighth goal and although Scott Douglas scored for Strathglass 7 minutes from the end, Lovat went on to clinch a second round derby tie at home to rivals Beauly. This match will live long in the memory of all those who watched it. Beauly earned their place in the second round with a 4-2 win over Inverness at Lochaber cruised past Caberfeidh with a 7-1 win at Castle Leod. Zander The matches between Kinlochshiel and Kingussie and Newtonmore and Kilmallie were postponed and will go ahead on Saturday 4 April 2009. Oban Camanachd had a walk-over in the first round of the Celtic Society Cup as Tayforth were unable to raise a team. It took extra time for Oban Celtic to beat Ballachulish 5-2 in their first round match. David MacPhee put the visitors ahead after only 4 minutes but Kenny Wotherspoon equalised just 3 minutes later. MacPhee scored a second after 36 minutes, and Wotherspoon levelled again a minute after the break. Extra time strikes from David Duffy, Kieron Gallagher and Alan Miller saw off Ballachulish who had Brian MacKinnon and Martin Duncan sent off. The Oban sides now meet at Mossfield in the second round of the competition. A Tom Whyte hat-trick made for a successful Kyles Athletic trip across the water as they defeated Glenurquhart had their first win in the top division at the third time of asking as they defeated Inveraray 3-1 at Drum na Drochit. Lewis MacLennan gave the home side the lead after 25 minutes but Inveraray’s Gary MacPherson levelled the match before the break. David MacLennan gave the Glen the lead 5 minutes after the break and Lewis MacLennan scored his second and Glenurquhart’s third goal in 72 minutes. In Marine Harvest South Division 1 a Johnny Will hat-trick gave Lochside Rovers a 3-0 win over Glasgow Mid Argyll at Yoker and puts the Oban side top of the league. In Marine Harvest North Division 2, Glenurquhart dropped their first point of the season when they drew with Glengarry at the early match at Drum na Drochit. David Smart gave them the lead after 22 minutes and the Glen were just 3 minutes away from their fourth league win in a row when Glengarry’s Ken Henderson won his side a share of the points. Skye Camanachd went down 5-3 to Lovat at Pairc na Laoch in a match that swung from end to end. James Matheson gave Lovat the lead after only 3 minutes but Angie MacDonald equalised. Iain Morrison gave the home side the lead with a rocket shot but Jimmy MacKenzie brought the sides level at the break. Steven Cameron gave Lovat the lead 10 minutes into the second half but Iain Morrison scored his second to level on the hour mark. A Steven Cameron gave Lovat a crucial lead and Jimmy MacKenzie scored his second 10 minutes from the end. In Marine Harvest South Division 2, a Grant MacPherson hat-trick gave Glenorchy a 3-0 win over Taynuilt went top of the league with a 6-2 home win over Glasgow Mid Argyll. Craig Anderson and David Smith put the visitors two up after just 15 minutes. However a hat-trick from Willie Gillies, a David Ferguson double and a strike from David Campbell gave the home side a convincing win. In Marine Harvest North Division 3, Boleskine got their first point of the season with a draw with Lochbroom at Farr.
