Women’s Shinty Round Up. | |
23 March 2009 The 2009 Women’s shinty season got off to a great start on Sunday 22 March 2009. Champions Glengarry served notice that they won’t be giving up their women’s shinty crown lightly as they opened their defence of the National Division One title with a 2-1 home win over Tir Conaill Harps on Sunday. The scoreline was a reverse of last season’s Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup Final between the same teams. Goals from Sarah Corrigal and Fiona Cumming gave Garry the points and a crucial early advantage in what is likely to be another closely-contested championship race. It was a good day all round for the host club at Invergarry as their second team marked their return to league action with a 2-0 victory against Young Izzy Dalgetty, who gained valuable experience in Glengarry’s senior team last season, was on target and an own goal also helped the home side to collect both points. Down the road at The Badenoch team went through their debut season with a 100 per cent record and they carried on in the same vein on Sunday. North Division Two player of the year Kirsty Deans struck twice, as did Jeanette McGregor. Other scorers were Linzi Deans, Karen Hamilton, Jane Nicol and Elizabeth McGregor. Linlithgow were also in free-scoring form as they opened their South Central Division Two campaign with a 5-1 home win against last year’s league runners-up Cowal & Bute. Kathryn Maclean and Fiona MacDougall netted two apiece for Linlithgow, whose other scorer was Laura Weir. Eilidh MacIver replied for Cowal.
