The Hogmanay Uist contest between West Side and East Side saw the West gain revenge for last year’s defeat.
This year’s event saw a much fitter and more organised West Side team than in 2007 with the new slimline versions of Caxy Macaulay and Angus MacInnes prominent!
The welcome addition of Sean Anderson - who has recently moved to the island and also plays in Glasgow - and junior coach Eoghainn McIsaac, who had a superb game, meant West Side had the upper hand from the first whistle.
The East Side team were missing three of their key players, who were in Ireland renewing old shinty / hurling acquaintances over the New Year. They struggled to put together a full team, finally drafting in youngsters Ewen Campbell and Sean Brady to fill the gaps.
The West Side extracted full revenge for their defeat last year by running out eventual 8-1 winners but the game was actually more evenly matched than the scoreline suggests with East Side sorely missing an good finisher.
The match went ahead under very subdued circumstances given the disappearance of Simon MacMillan. Many of the players had been out searching the shorelines earlier on the day of the match.
